News today states that there was a shooting at Sino-Vietnamese border that led to five Chinese and Two Vietnamese killed.
The news said that the Vietnamese side receive information from Chinese side that there will be Chinese illegal emigrant crossing the border. So they stopped them and prepared to send them back. While they were preparing documents, a Chinese grabbed a gun from the guard and started shooting. The Chinese appear to be Muslim.

A Chinese national Friday opened fire and killed two Vietnamese border soldiers, four of his countrymen and himself with a gun he grabbed from a local border gate security officer, who was trying to stop more than a dozen of illegal immigrants from entering the Southeast Asian country via the northern border.
“Seven people were killed in the shooting, including two Vietnamese border soldiers and five Chinese nationals,” Nguyen Van Doc, chairman of the northern Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh, where the incident took place, said in a statement at 4:00 pm.
A group of 16 Chinese nationals were attempting to illegally cross the border near the Bac Phong Sinh border gate in Quang Ninh when they were detected by authorities at 4:20 am the same day, the provincial People’s Committee said in an official announcement.
There are four women and two children among the illegal immigrants.
Officers then asked these foreigners to go to a station at the border gate to complete procedures to repatriate them to China.
At 12:00 pm, while the officers were working with them, one of the Chinese rushed to a border gate security guard and snatched his gun.
The Chinese man opened fire and killed one border soldier.
The Chinese nationals then dashed to sabotage the border gate station. When besieged by Vietnamese officers, some of them hurt themselves while others attempted to commit suicide by jumping from one of the upper floors of the station.
The Chinese shooter then fired at the crowd, killing another Vietnamese border soldier and four of his countrymen before taking his own life with a shot in the head.

There are reports the illegal Chinese crossing into Vietnam were Uighurs and China informed the Vietnamese of the illegal crossing. If this is true interesting to see what spin they do now.

De rigueur is that the report ends with the Uighurs are fighting for independence, against Chinese oppression, the influx of Chinese into Xinjiang and human rights abuses.

It seems quite clear that this isn't just a normal group of illegal immigrants (I've not heard of Chinese economic illegal immigrants sneaking into Vietnam before), and the Chinese government wouldn't care all that much about economic immigrants anyways.

My guess is that this group, or elements within that group, were under surveillance, if not being actively pursued by the Chinese authorities before crossing the boarder, and are either criminals or terrorists.

Given the extreme reaction to being detained by the Vietnamese, it seems a safe bet that they were either terrorists or drug/arms smugglers, and they knew that their crimes likely carry the death penalty if sent back to China, so decided they might as well make a fight of it.

If the group were terrorists, I wonder if the Chinese passed that detail on to the Vietnamese. If Beijing did warn the Vietnamese of who they were dealing with, then this incident would be on the Vietnamese as they should have been better prepared. If China didn't pass on that crucial detail, then China will bare some responsibility as well for what happened.

Now why would Japan have to resort to all these petty childish stunts of late if they felt secure with Obama's pivot?

This happens right before Obama's trip to Asia meaning it's directed at him who'll have to hear an earful from ally South Korea. This also is a sign the Trans Pacific Partnership is falling apart because it was stated early that talks with Japan are just discussions and not agreements. Meaning Japan is holding out for a better bargain because they can since it's all about China and Obama is past the point of no return since he bet against China in his foreign policy.

Interest this also come at a time when China has reportedly decrease the frequency of CG patrols around Diaoyu Island. Almost as if Abe want to stoke up tension with China and see what the US would do about it.

One theory about Abe's strategy is that his ultimate aim is to throw off the American "yoke". By provoking a conflict with China, but when the shooting start and Americans fail to come to Japan's aid. (what happened in Crimea) At that time, Abe would have the domestic and international support to rearm in earnest, possibly including nuclear weapons.
