Russian troops left a checkpoint near the Georgian village of Nadarbazevi, about 40 miles west of Tbilisi. Russia is holding the European Union responsible for guaranteeing peace and security in the volatile area, and the European Union said it would oversee a "step-by-step" handover of the buffer zones near the separatist enclaves of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Thai soldiers took a rest after patrolling near Government House in Bangkok, a day after violent clashes rocked the Thai capital, leaving one person dead and 400 injured. The army was deployed on the streets of Bangkok on Tuesday after the worst political violence since 1992. Protesters continued a six-week sit-in outside the prime minister's office, forcing the government to conduct its business from a former international airport.

A police officer took photographs of the wreckage of a Yeti Airlines aircraft at Lukla airport in Katmandu, Nepal. The small plane crashed and caught fire as it tried to land in foggy weather at a tiny mountain airport near Mount Everest, killing 18 people, including 16 tourists from Germany, Australia and Nepal, officials said.
