South Africa's new police commissioner Bheki Cele, addresses the media in Pretoria on July 29, 2009. President Jacob Zuma named a close ally as South Africa's new police chief, 18 months after the country's top cop was put on special leave for alleged corruption. New police commissioner Bheki Cele, the provincial safety and transport minister in KwaZulu-Natal, pledged to take a tough stance against crime in South Africa, which is among the world's most violent countries. Cele said "You can't be nice, you can't be soft and you can't be moving around kissing crime. You need to be tough because you are dealing with tough guys." Cele also said "I would like one day for a young girl to be able to walk alone from a nightclub or elsewhere without any fear of attack, abuse or rape," Cele told a briefing alongside President Zuma. The top cop takes over the country's crime fighting force with the daunting task of reducing massive crime levels in a country where an average of 50 people are killed a day.
