We can do gene engineering on plants and other creatures in a nano scale, to augment them to suit our needs, today... (and we can't space travel yet)
And here ABC78 provides the link that "think tanks" of the best of the current height of our civilization (aka, the USA hegemony system) can think of - is that the aliens who can space travel, are bothered to do some "contact" with us in a fasion the "war" we understands.

(PS. Uncle sam having some trouble today, is because they as human, bothered about the defeated human counterpart, aliens don't - if someone try to make a point "we can fight like jihadist!!!" to resist aliens.)
