It surprises me that foreign government officials (Turkey) taking part in political rallies and campaigns in other countries (Netherlands and Germany). How could this even happen?

As far as I understand, a foreign official can only enter another country at the invitation of the host country in his or her official capacity or as a tourist with a tourist visa. In the first way, the purpose of the visit is agreed before hand, it is a business trip that can not involve political campaigns even with own citizen because in another country. The second way the purpose surely does not allow political campaigns.

So how could the Turkish ministers even think of doing such things is totally beyond me.

There is one question I must ask, maybe delft know more details. The Turkish minister entered Netherlands on road from Germany. I know there is no boarder between the two countries, so the "fault" is not on Netherlands. But how did she enter Germany in the first place? I think the German boarder control should not have let her in without an official invitation from the German government. Did she enter Germany in other means like tourist visa? If so, it is a breach of EU law, but I did not hear Germany accusing her of wrong conduct. Every news focus on politics rather than legal terms. Is there something I missed? Isn't it much easier for EU to "fight back" with "illegal entrance and misconduct".?

Obviously no country would tolerate foreign officials holding rallies trying to influence local elections.

However, the political rallies in question are about Turkish domestic politics, which is why I think they were originally allowed. That is why Turkey is throwing a temper tantrum about the Dutch cancelling them, on what they feel is very short notice.

It may even be seen as an attempt to influence the outcome of the upcoming Turkish referendum, although I would say that is a stretch given the numbers involved.

Erdogan has always been a short-fused blown hard who loves to throw out extremist slogans.

He is, in many ways, the original Trump. Those two will either love each other or loath each other once they meet in person given how alike they are.

A fascinating exchange in which French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen informs a reporter that no one trusts the media highlights how incredibly disconnected from reality the establishment press really is.

The reporter tells Le Pen her advice that people “turn away from the traditional media, (and) go and find news on the Internet” is “dangerous”.

Le Pen looks bemused, asking, “why?”


The reporter responds by stating, “On the Internet, you can find conspiracy theories, all types of things, it’s not necessarily verified information.”

“Don’t you think that the traditional media have conspiracy theories?” replied Le Pen, adding, “I’ve read a ton of things about Russia intervening in the presidential campaign and other things like that – I mean there is at least as much fake news in the traditional media as on the Internet!”



The reporter then accuses her of ‘inciting’ people to “find information” on the Internet “about things that weren’t verified”.

“It could never be worse than what you guys are saying or what you write in the traditional newspapers,” responds Le Pen.

The reporter then accuses the National Front leader of acting like Trump in trying to undermine the media as a campaign tool.

“Madame, French people have no confidence in the media whatsoever, are you aware of that, or not?” asks Le Pen.

The exchange once again highlights how the mainstream media is completely out of touch with reality.

These people still think that they have absolute credibility when in reality trust in the establishment press is lower than at any time in recent history.

The air force personnel were deployed as part of Sentinelle, a military operation launched in January 2015 after the Paris terrorist attacks to support the police and protect sensitive sites.

The interior minister, Bruno Le Roux, said the man shot dead at the airport was linked with a car-jacking incident earlier on Saturday in a northern suburb of Paris. He said the man had shot at a female police officer after being stopped for speeding before fleeing the scene and stealing a car at gunpoint.

Le Roux said the officer had not been badly injured.

No explosive devices were found on the dead man’s body, an interior ministry spokesman said.

About 3,000 people were evacuated from both terminals at Orly and all flights were suspended, with some diverted to Charles de Gaulle airport. Some flights began operating again early Saturday afternoon. No one else was injured in the Orly incident.
