The whole situation started when Columbia attacked FARC-querillians in Equadors territory. This escalated the relations between these two. Now Venezuela is doing this as a symbolic gesture to support Equador in this matter.

The Venezuelans wanted the Colombians to reinforce their presence on the border to enhance security, but as the Colombians do so, they shift the military balance near the border to the Colombians, and the Venezuelans feel more threatened as they see Colombia as a puppet of the US... so they beef up their presence at the border...

Why is everybody assuming that this is an agressive act by Chaves

Because Colombia has no interest in attacking Venezuela. If Chavez is concerned there might be a repeat of the recent attack on the FARC in Equador, he just needs to make sure his country doesn't become a haven for those crooks. Or he could co-operate with Colombia in flushing them out.

I beleive that Columbia made an excursion into Equador a little while back.

Yeah, because terrorist FARC leaders were chilling out there planning their next attack. Colombia can't just let them do that - it has to take whatever opportunities it has to hunt those criminals down.

The Colombian military is extremely proficient at their trade. Small and maybe slightly dated in certain areas, but man for man, perhaps one of the top 3 militaries in the region.

Also, the US won't let Colombia be invaded by Chavez. The US is a major backer of the Colombian government in their War against Terror and Drugs. If the situation will look like it will turn hot, expect the US to park a CSG or two off the Venezuela to send a message to cool off or else.

As of today the Columbians have announced that they will not reinforce their border positions and escalate. They have however released documents they captured from FARC indicating that Chavez funded the FARC to the tune of $300 million dollars.

At the same time, now the Ecuadorans are building up on their side of the Columbian border.

The US is heavily invested in the Columbian regime and will not let them be invaded and toppled in favor of another leftist government in the region. I expect if Chaves and/or Ecuadro try anything overt...as in invading and tyring to topple the Columbian government...that they will see a lot of their newly invested military hardware destroyed by US interventionfrom the air and sea.

Chavez knows this, and I believe he is posturing to try and get the Columbians to react badly so he can seek support in pushing it further. I believe that the Columbians, short of Chavez pushing the button, are smarter than that.

Colombia is saying more than that. According to the BBC, they are accusing FARC of trying to acquire WMD:rofl:

Yes, I see that now. If they tie Chavez's money (the $300 million) to the attempted purchase for the WMD...things will go badly for Chavez (I would hope) in world opinion.

But, from everything I can tell, Chavez is a real despot and will simply spin it in such a fashion to further agitate his own citizens in the move for action on his, Chavez's part.

Hopefully, it will al blow over...but these are very serious charges if true.

I doubt that is true or serious.

The Columbians know that the US fully backs them, and in America's backyard that means they are safe. So they do not need to escalate. The real problem is that FARC cannot survive in Columbia alone, and to be eliminated its foreign bases must be destroyed. That means that the heart of this issue isn't going to go away.
