Just for a little perspective.

Could you imagine the reaction if this had been a Russian or Chinese Shipment to Iran?

You're right that would have been a huge situation. The one key difference though is that Iran has a nuclear program and Taiwan does not, nor is there evidence Taiwan is pursuing nukes. IF there was China would be spreading it everywhere.

Obviously Beijing is actually not really enraged.:D

Taiwan is serving as a very effective ´technology membrane´for the mainland enabling the indirect influx of ´export controlled´ know how from the US, Japan and also some european countries. Probably all what may have been learned from these ´ICBM parts´ was already known to PRC's missile industry so the damage to US interests seems to be quite small. :coffee:

I'd say if half of your espionage activities come from Taiwan nationals, that's a problem.

Remember that Taiwanese woman arrested in China for spying for Taiwan. The US lobbied for her release and they evertually got it. Then the US found out she transferred technology to China and was arrested in the US for espionage. It just goes to show many of these activties are probably independent and not actually considered Chinese "spies" in China. Meaning Taiwanese spies in some cases are freelance most likely for monetary purposes not political. Which says that alone is a Taiwanese problem.

You cant just say that Taiwanese people are the problem, there are many spies in the world which are not Taiwanese, don't just single one race for spying. There are many Taiwanese who still love their country and will do everything to protect the very country which granted them the power to live a free life in a democratic country. So please don't single out races for problems that the US government has, its leading up to racism saying that one race is giving the US a hard time :nono:. And all this spying is off the topic, since the ICBM fuses have nothing to do with spying. :eek:ff

Yes, kliu, just what I was thinking. You can't judge people on race - it's racism pure and simple.

Because of the 2001 terrorist attack should all Muslims be kicked out of the US security forces, intelligence, etc? Of course not. So similarly Taiwanese and Taiwan should not be the subject of unreasonable suspicion just because of a few people. I wonder how many different "ethnic groups" involved in the US military/security have not sold on information/acted against US interests....

We're kinda moving off topic, so I'll make this short.

My advice to younger Chinese-Americans/Taiwanese-Americans: avoid work in defense industry. It's a fact that that foreign intelligence service target immigrants from their country/ethnicity.

The world of espionage plays by very different set of rules. Even if you're not a spy, you could end up as the fall guy.

I never said that. You said Taiwan is not a problem therefore doesn't pose a national security risk for the US. Yes it does since nearly half of the spies arrested for passing secrets to China are from Taiwan. BTW, learn your definitions of words. Nothing there about race.

If my left arm picks up the cup instead of my right arm then it is ok, because they both work for the same person. If you pick up the cup and let me drink it is ok too, because I benefit. But if you pick up the cup and give it to someone else then your a spy and everyone one else that looks like you or talks to you.

"Spy" is almost like the word communism back in the cold wars days means nothing.

Was Marco polo a spy or explorer. How about everyone that acts in their own interest, an explorer, or trader (from the word traitor). Why don't we call them witches?

A spy is someone who works to get information for their personal advantage. Everyone is a spy and a witch.

How can a mistake this massive have been made puzzles me unless...it wasn't a mistake

If you have worked in inventory or in a warehouse, things are often boxed up and sealed. The only way you can tell one thing from another is through tracking codes, so you better be damned sure that your tracking codes are correct.

Still, you don't put a house electrical fuse with a warhead fuse in the same storage room or storage building. Anyway, I am sure someone would find a good explanation to pass this off as a simple honest mistake. :D
