A U.S. soldier from 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defence Artillery secures an area during a joint military training with Bulgarian army soldiers at Novo Selo military base near the town of Sliven, some 350 km (217 miles) east of Sofia, October 9, 2008. Though the Socialist government agreed in 2006 to host up to 2,500 U.S. troops at three bases in Bulgaria, opinion polls show that a majority of people fear their presence could make them a potential target for attack rather than provide protection. Since the start of the war in Afghanistan in 2001, the northern part of the border with Pakistan has been a particular focus of concern for American forces. The borderline there is essentially a legal fiction, an imaginary line that separates people with the same ethnicity and history, drawn across hundreds of miles of terrain so rugged it is impossible to fence off or even fully patrol. In the photos above a number of United States soldiers from the Sixth Squadron, Fourth Cavalry, left Combat Outpost Lowell near Kamu to replace soldiers at a hillside "overwatch" position.
