Recently, the British government had to admit that a new sort of napalm was extensively used in Iraq by US forces.

Well actually this isn't really a recent discovery, there were quite a few reports of the use of white phosporus by US forces, though it was not really covered by the US media. In reality there are many stories in Iraq that are not being given airtime in the US, because it's "controversial". To the UK's credit, they do have some excellent documentaries and journalists covering the occupation...

This is probably the best one I have seen yet. I won't discuss the contents here as it deviates from the thread, but I think it is definitely worth seeing.

That is somewhat diffuse. Napalm isn't actually white phosphorus. But a mix based mostly on benzene. In the beginning '90s I think the US developed a derivative of that, designated MK-77. That uses now kerosene as the main component, which is why the US insits that this is not napalm. It seems to eb used on insurgents after the '03 Iraq campaign.

Just some hours ago I heared there are unconfirmed reports by US TV stations saying a USAF aircraft from Dshibuti attacked (a) hideout(s) of islamistic fighters in southern Somalia, who were belived to be higher ranking al Qaida membres with a big caliber cannon. Five to seven persons were killed.

Some of you think and the media thinks white phosphorus is a form of naplam?? This is ignorant. the US disposed of all it's Naplam about 30 years ago.

White phosphorus has been used by the US military for many, many years. It was used in WWII. It is not napalm. It is an anti personell weapon. Meant to terrorize.

The US has rockets tippied with what we use to call "Willie Pete"(white phosphorus) And has never stopped using it.

And war is not a video game. It sucks . It's murderous. Bloddy. Violent. The innocents die right along with the combantants.

US launches attacks in Somalia

By MOHAMED OLAD HASSAN, Associated Press Writer
47 minutes ago

MOGADISHU, Somalia - U.S. helicopter gunships launched new attacks Tuesday against suspected al-Qaida members, a Somali official said, a day after forces launched airstrikes in the first offensive in the African country since 18 U.S. troops were killed there in 1993.

Monday's attack was the first overt military action by the U.S. in Somalia since it led a U.N. force in the 1990s that intervened in Somalia in an effort to fight famine. The mission led to clashes between U.N. forces and Somali warlords, including the "Black Hawk Down" battle that left 18 U.S. servicemen dead.

Helicopter gunships launched new attacks Tuesday near the scene of a U.S. airstrike in the village of Hayi, although it was not clear if they were American or Ethiopian aircraft, and it was not known if there were any casualties.

Two helicopters "fired several rockets toward the road that leads to the Kenyan border," said Ali Seed Yusuf, a resident of the town of Afmadow in southern Somalia.

The aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived off Somalia's coast and launched intelligence-gathering missions over Somalia, the military said. Three other U.S. warships are conducting anti-terror operations off the Somali coast.

U.S. warships have been seeking to capture al-Qaida members thought to be fleeing Somalia after Ethiopia invaded Dec. 24 in support of the government and drove the Islamic militia out of the capital and toward the Kenyan border.

The White House would not confirm the attack, nor would the Pentagon.

But a U.S. government official said at least one AC-130 gunship was used. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the operation's sensitivity.

AC-130 gunships have elaborate sensors that can go after targets day or night. They are operated by the Special Operations Command and have been used heavily against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The airstrike occurred Monday evening after the suspects were seen hiding on a remote island on the southern tip of Somalia, close to the Kenyan border, Somali officials said. The island and a site near the village of Hayi, 155 miles to the north, were hit.

The main target was Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, who allegedly planned the 1998 attacks on the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, that killed 225 people.

He is also suspected of planning the car bombing of a beach resort in Kenya and the near simultaneous attempt to shoot down an Israeli airliner in 2002. Ten Kenyans and three Israelis were killed in the blast at the hotel, 12 miles north of Mombasa. The missiles missed the airliner.

There is no excuse this time! I suspect they were using the tanker as a cover to sneak into the Gulf... and made the news announcing their "professionalism". How long before more serious damage caused in the ongoing naval buildup there? the Iranians even won't have to attempt close the straits- we will do it ourselves next time!

that they don't need a bomb to stop petroleum exports through the Straits of Hormuz. And they say they will, if the US bothers them too much about their nuclear energy program. Iranian sabotage in the Straits of Hormuz could deprive the world of 40 percent of its petroleum. Ouch. And, as the US has discovered in Iraq, stopping sabotage isn't easy.
As if to illustrate the point,

in the busy, crowded Straits of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf on Monday. While it is not true that a sunken supertanker would block the Straits, it is true that it wouldn't be so hard to sink some supertankers.

BLUEJACKET where did you get the idea that the SSN 750 was sneaking into the gulf? An LA class does not have to sneak anywhere.

You say you were on a ship, CVN-71, that had a collision. These things happen in any navy. I'm sure you are aware of that.

By the way the Ike CSG is now operating near the Horn of Africa.

It perhaps doesn't fit here 100%, but I just think that statement is somewhat spilitting hairs. (?)
To me there's no doubt that Mark 77 mod5 bombs exist in the US inventory and were used in recent conflicts in small numbers.
I don't blame the US for having/using incendiary bombs or whatever in generall.
I just think this strong insisting the US didn't have Napalm for decades is strange.
At first, from how I understand some sources (listed at the end of the post) the actual Napalm follow on Mod 77 were Napalm as well, were the last batch (mod4) was stored in Fallbrook and destroyed in march '01.
The mod5 (?) now consists of a mixture mostly based on kerosene with a lesser conzentration of benzene. That is for some reason less dangerous to the enviroment.
It burns longer and at higher temperatures, so to me that is at least a very Napalm-like weapon.
Just a personal thought.

2 hours ago I saw a report in the news that aircraft from the Ike are flying recce over southern Somalia, but strike aircraft out of Dshibuti are actually engaging the targets. Obviously in conjunction with ethiopean aircraft.
