The important thing is to test new concepts, regardless of whether they work out. You never know until you try is an important tenant of engineering.
Though the video is a couple of weeks old, I think it is a neat overview of the San Antonio class. In particular, I was surprised to see how modern the LCAC cockpit is!
The Air Force previously estimated the Sentinel missile to be ready for its first test launch in 2025 and to reach “initial operational capability” by 2029 but the timeline is likely to change, officials said. By recent DoD estimates, Sentinel is projected to cost at least $96 billion for 400 missiles. However, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall recently expressed worries about the Sentinel program’s complexity and projected cost growth.
Back in the old days the US had two solid rocket makers. Aerojet and Thiokol. But now that just Thiokol is left and they were bought by Northrop Grumman it is basically a single source contract. They can charge the government however much they want. Which of course they do.
