Re: LHA-6, USS America Launched

The Enterprise incident, ( not too be confused with a Episode of Startrek broadcast 1967.) In 1968 a Russian November class SSN was ordered too intercept the CVN 65 USS Enterprise on her cruise. the Navy learned of this and gave orders for the BIG E too step on the throttle thinking her faster then the Russian. the Russian however kept the pace. but truth was there was a price for such the USN based there assessment on there safety regulations demanding a level of shielding for the reactor that the Russians did not build too so they had a really light weight ship holding a powerful reactor allowing better speed but irradiating her crew in the process.
After the Incident the USN developed the Los Angeles class SSN a boat built too speed and escort carriers

During the "cold war" era USSR subs were constantly shadowing USN Carriers.

I was taught that the life expectancy of a Soviet nuclear tech aboard a nuke boat was 5-7 years because of the radiation leaks.

The Russians would agree likely they specifically built boats just too do the Job. The Papa and Oscar classes in case the latter rings a bell the Oscar II class lost one of her members in a very public way K141 Kursk. Oscars were the largest Attack subs ever built until, one might argue the SSGN Ohio class conversion. a experimental Papa type sub was the fastest admitted K222 topped off at some where around 44.85 kn in 1971 submerged but she was loud and took a pounding in the process.

It's common practice too keep the true speed of craft in the military a secret from all but her crew and those in the need too know bracket, Especially in the Aircraft and Sub fleets

Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 42 deployed with four Fire Scouts aboard frigate USS Klakring (FFG 42) June 29 in support of operations off the Horn of Africa.

With a record number of Fire Scouts aboard the guided missile frigate, the Navy’s goal is to fly up to 12 hours a day and significantly increase real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) support to combatant commanders.

Thanks Navyreco for that wonderful video. I visited the USS Constitution several years ago and it's a wonderful ship. At first I thought it was a large ship of the line man of war type, but it's a frigate alright, big one too. Old Ironside (her nickname) was built to last.
I also visited the USS Constitution, back in 2000. Got the opportunity to talk at length with the US Navy Captain staioned there as her CO. He was very knowledgable and very informative...was happy to spend the time with me.

He advised my about a book I would recommend for anyone interested in the 200+ year history of that ship, the oldest and longest commissioned ship in Naval history...of any navy.

It is called "A Most Fortunate Ship, A Narrative History of Old Ironsides," by Tyrone Martin who was Captain of the USS Constitution during its bicentinnial cellebration, and who researched and wrote the book while in service. I bought it at the library there at the museum for the vessel in Boston Harbor.

A GREAT read!

Here's a link for it at Amazon, a really good addition to any naval enthusiasts library:

I keep it prominantly displayd next to my wooden, fully rigged, 1/96 model of the USS Constitution in our library. I'll take a pitcure of the model of the USS Constitution in our library with the book this evening after work and try and remember and post it here.

The U.S. Navy and Raytheon Company have begun integrating the Miniature Air Launched Decoy Jammer variant into the U.S. Navy's fleet of F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets. The integration process will include a series of risk reduction activities and technology demonstrations.

MALD® is a state-of-the-art, low-cost flight vehicle that is modular, air-launched and programmable. It weighs less than 300 pounds and has a range of approximately 500 nautical miles (about 575 statute miles). MALD protects aircraft and their crews by duplicating the combat flight profiles and signatures of U.S. and allied aircraft. The MALD-J adds radar-jamming capability to the basic MALD platform.

Interesting system. Probably a lot more efficient than regular Chaff n' Flares... Only draw back obviously is that on a jet the size of an F18, it takes up valuable weapon stations under the wings...

It has a land attack mode too?

Raytheon is also leveraging MALD's modularity, enabling sailors to rapidly change the weapon's electronic warfare payload in response to threats.

In addition to protecting valuable aircraft, MALD® offers counter air operations to neutralize air defense systems that pose a threat to U.S. and allied pilots.

Pretty advanced for its time ?

Not a "news" by any means, but I found this small movie interesting

They were beautiful ships and mostly very successful. We are happy to have this remainder of way of life and way of war of two centuries ago still with us. But the sixth of those first frigates was taken in a very short time by HMS Shannon, also a large frigate but a little smaller.

Yes they were. And as promised, here is my Museum Quality, 1/96 scale wood model of the USS Constitution, prominently displayed in our library.

I plan to get a wood and glass case fo it, to help keep the dust off and protect it, but haven't found one to fit. I will end up probably having one made out of maple wood and 1/4" shatter proof, hardened glass. Also have painted sixteen 1/96 figures (which I have had for quite some time now) to place around the vessel, just haven't done so yet. There are also a couple of repairs I need to make. Monsters from the depths, in the forms of grandchildren wanting to play with the big "toy boat", have damaged her on occassion...but not near to the damage caused by HMS Jave during the War of 1812 when the USS Constitution defeated that vessel in a furious fight.

...and here are a couple of pictures olf her after her 1997 complete restoration to 1812 standards in preparation for her bi-centinneal celebration where she sailed under sail power for the first time in 116 years and fired her guns in 21-gun salutes. The last time she had fired her guns in anger was during the 1850s. Now, she sails every year at least once during the July 4th Celebration and is maintained by a US Navy crew of about 60 personnel including a full Commander as her Captain.
