The competition likely came down to more so to design and USAF thought Boeing had the better one. Boeing's also been in the program since the beginning and there hasn't really been news of them falling behind in the stages up till now and they've made a lot capital investments into mfg facilities for combat aircraft in the mean time. Im in wait and see mode tbh
I have a different take on why they won, its because if they didn't Boeing would be out of the fighter/bomber business for a while and they don't want to let LockMart to monopolize the market. Doesn't hurt that they're the only other manufacturer with nice factories producing nothing.

Thats definitely the biggest reason most likely. Boeing needs something to claw back its losses with... but on the program side I dont think its that big of a deal
