Which is why some of us opposed Cheney's vicious take down of the F-14 program and Grumman in general. He did everything he could to kill the company.

Just when the F-14 had finally fixed its major issue, the TF-30 engines, which were replaced with a variant of those in the F-15. When it finally got multirole capabilities including bombing with GPS guided ammunition. He shitcanned the aircraft. Going to the point of physically destroying the remaining aircraft with the excuse he did not want the parts to end up in Iran. The truth is that was done to prevent future administrations reversing his decision and thus from it ever going back into service.

The USAF fighter mafia (shockingly!) has decided a fighter is required for the future:
The “Fighter mafia” are not who you think they are. See the Fighter Mafia/ reformers are a group of analysts/Pundits who regurgitate buzzwords and Phrases with an Emphasis on air to air maneuvering. Had they their way the U.S. Air fleet would be built on aircraft with more in common to JF17. Light weight aircraft with as little fuel as possible as small a set of sensors as necessary and with an emphasis on air to air manouver with simple weapons like cannons and IR missiles. Fighter mafia hate the F15 and only claimed the F16 earlier in the program during demonstration rejected the multirole version built until it became a darling of the media. Fighter mafia view stealth as a con and were the guys who pretty much were the darlings of HBO, Discovery, History channel (before it became that Alien channel) and RT.
Yes the USAF believes in NGAD as a fighter. Yes because the primary objective is air superiority and a replacement of F22. Just as Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Japan, France, Germany, China and Russia have all basically laid out a general strategy for their next generation air superiority system based off a “fighter”.

You are technically correct. The original FM is long gone. I was being flippant and snarky. However, to say there is not a bias towards fighters when everything else in the USAF has been placed by the wayside for a long time...
well the USAF had sat out a number of modernizations. It’s a very busy org on that right now. NGAD, F35, F15EX, F16 modernizations. B21, KC46, T7, E7, E4C,VC25B, Sentinel ICBM, AIM260 it’s a list with even more projects.

Looks like NGAD isn't cancelled. The decision to award the contract could come as soon as today. From the looks of Boeing vs Lockheed martin's stock price, Boeing looks like it's the likely winner here. Which would be hilarious, considering the sheer amount of projects that Boeing has fucked up in the last decade, both civilian and military. Also the fact that they have never made a stealth plane before. Lockheed had experience with the F-22 and still had so many teething issues with the F-35, I can't imagine the issues and delays Boeing will have, especially with corruption in America at an all time high and rising.

They don't really have a choice unless they want Lockheed to have a monopoly over stealth fighter contracts going forward, and F-35 has already demonstrated the drawbacks of that. Boeing needs some design experience to remain a viable player.

Time will tell whether going high-risk high-reward was a good idea, but the choice is understandable.

They could have given Boeing the FA-XX program, which is a lot less ambitious than the NGAD. Lockheed has withdrawn from the FA-XX too. I guess we're see, we don't even know if Boeing is getting the contract, although the sudden 10% spike in their stock price 2 days ago while LMT has fallen 1% on the same day paints a clear picture.
