It feels like this war is terribly tough for Russia.
Although Russia has a population of about 150 million, it is still not sufficient to support the national economy and military expenditure. It needs Ukraine's population and land to be converted into economic benefits, so as far as possible to decrease civilian damage, end the fighting, and start production. The direct effect of this is that the Russian army is so restrained that it hurts itself and also slows down the process. And outside of the east is not close to them, although politically incorrect, they should ignore the loss of these civilians if Russia's best interests are maximized.
After the USSR, the Russian army made less military progress for various reasons. The main progress lies in hypersonic weapons, SSN/SSBN and stealth aircraft. SSN/SSBN can be ignored. For the purpose mentioned above, the Russian army does not want to use hypersonic weapons for decapitation. And they did not use stealth aircraft to sustain air supremacy. Thus the two sides are essentially the same version of the war. Although the Russian army has advantages, it likewise has considerable losses.
And the standard of the 21st century army, such as drones, the Russian army is also severely insufficient. As for the data link, I heard that the Russian army still does not have an integrated data link like LINK16, only some small data link can accommodate 30 terminals, which is too hard to coordinate and gather information. (If it is incorrect about data link, it can be ignored)
At the same time, I have heard some information with limited credibility, such as the Russian army employs a considerable number of conscripts instead of contract soldiers, these soldiers have limited combat capabilities, and they should not have gone abroad to fight? This may explain that there are some Russians who don't like the West but don't support the war after they see reports of losses from their friends and relatives.
All in all, it is like buying a laptop: portable, inexpensive and high-performance can only select two out of three, while Russia has not only selected all, but hasn't done its best yet.
