I haven’t been able to figure out Russia’s central strategy just yet and I think it’s because we’re still at the generalist stage of the operation where specific objectives haven’t necessarily been acted upon just yet.

Possibly, at this stage, the Russians are just trying to hit as many points as they can to diffuse the concentration of any Ukrainian responses.
They don't want to occupy the country so there's no rush to advance through as much territory as possible. They could sit where they are and wait until the Ukrainian regime collapses and then move in to restore order.

Going slowly giving Ukrainians the chance to retreat avoids casualties on both sides.

Such strategy risks handing over the initiative to the enemy. Normally you see the attacker maintain momentum for as long as they can.

I really think they’re waiting for the first concentrated and determined resistance to form a “front” that they can then smash.

But, they’re definitely pushing in the south!
