The one important thing is, Russia is always trying to leverage its military hard power achieving political objectives. It's one and the same.
I wouldn't say always. Russia has been successful politically in regions like Africa, SEA, South America without using military force.
If it wasn't successful, we see things like Zelensky suddenly banning all the Russian speaking TV networks and arresting Putin allies inside Ukraine.
It's too late for that.

Western intelligence says there's hundreds or thousands of Russian SOF inserted in Ukraine, hundreds in Kyiv alone.
Guess we'll see what happens now.

Most likely to cause chaos, gather intelligence ahead of the advance, not some Tom Clancy spy plot.

So between recognising the two new republics and beginning military operations how many hours was that? About 24?

Feels like Putin gave them 24 hours to have meetings and come to a decision and tell Zelensky to back down. But no decision was coming after that time period and sanctions were pretty small fry so now he's making another move forward on the board.
