No that's not damaged due to the RN commitments they are very hard pressed and the fleet of 7 x SSN the Trafalgar Class few of them are always deployed

They have clocked up many many miles HMS Turbulent deployed in 2011 for 267 days of which 190 days she was completely under water

After such a deployment the SSN are usually put out of action for atleast 6-9 months for a overhaul and repair, those panels have been replaced and some are rusted and also some part of the submarine is dry and some is wet thats why it looks like that

It is a formindable SSN only to be surpassed by the Astute Class SSN

Ok, but 6 only Trafalgar now :)

SSN US are deployed for 6 months, normaly.

With 7 SSN which 2 Astute, the 2 in service ? RN get about 3, 4... ready for operations ?

Well you know what I mean if we are to be totally specific then it's as follows

There is two Astute Class in commission

HMS Astute and HMS Ambush

There is 5 Trafalgar Class in operation

HMS Tireless
HMS Torbay
HMS Trenchant
HMS Talent
HMS Triumph

HMS Tireless is due to be decommissioned this year and is due to be replaced by HMS Artful the 3rd Astute Class

As soon as one is decommissioned another is commissioned however RN will be down to 6 SSN for about a year while HMS Artful is commissioned

They might stretch out the service of HMS Tireless until that happens but even then we are only talking about 1-2 year gap inbetweeen

This cycle will continue until the last Astute Class is commissioned until 2025 which will be the 7th SSN of the Astute Class

Thing to note is RN has not cut the SSN numbers they did a like for like replacement 7 with 7

We will have to wait till 2015 but SSBN is likely up be 4 for 4

RN knows its strength is in nuclear submarines they never cut the numbers

If the SSN fleet of the Royal Navy was given unrestricted access to hunt and kill during 1982 they would have had the ability to sink almost every major Argentinian vessal

RN had the biggest and baddest Soviet vessals tagged during the Cold War they know sub sea operations like no other

Personally i think UK needs 6 OPVs that's 4 for the UK and 1 for Gibraltar and 1 for the Falklands

3 is really taking the biscuit

New British patrol vessels contract signed, design shown

It was announced in November that the MoD would purchase three patrol ships which will be built by BAE Systems.
On the 12th of March during a visit to shipyards on the Clyde, the Minister for Defence Equipment Philip Dunne announced that MoD has committed £20 million to the programme. The MoD said:

The contract will enable BAE Systems to begin work on parts such as the engines and gearboxes, which require a longer time to make and therefore have to be ordered in advance of the main shipbuilding programme.

Mr Dunne said:

“This £20 million is a significant milestone, critical to the successful delivery of these 3 vessels for the Royal Navy. The OPVs will not only provide an additional capability for the UK but also, at its peak, the OPV programme will safeguard more than 800 vital skilled roles in the shipbuilding industry.”

When compared to the current River Class, its very evident that the new OPVs will be much larger and will feature with increased storage and a larger flight deck for Merlin helicopters. The first vessel is expected to be handed over to the Navy in 2017.

The first OPV is expected to be delivered to the Royal Navy in 2017.

Easiest way to get us to a force level of 6 OPVs is to retain the three original Rivers in service alongside the three new ships. Actually that gets us to Seven, as there is the Falklands OPV HMS Clyde to take into account, the only member of the class to have a helicopter deck. I'd also refit the original three with helidecks as well.

The problem is that the fate of the River Class will be decided in the defence review next year and it is likely they are all going to be retired come 2017 or 2018 for two reasons

One Because its hard to justify upgrades and overhauls when new builds are coming online

And two Also the new OPV are bigger and much more capable than the ships they are replacing so they always can justify the cut in numbers

But the issue is the increase in capability alone does not justify the cut in numbers because then you start to losse the "critical mass" when you cut cut cut right down the size of the navy
