FLAGSHIP FOR SALE Royal Navy’s flagship helicopter carrier HMS Ocean could join Brazil’s fleet as defence chiefs confirm it is up for sale

ROYAL Navy flagship HMS Ocean could soon be sailing under a different flag – as part of the Brazilian fleet.

Defence chiefs have confirmed the 28,000-ton helicopter carrier is for up for sale and that they are in talks with foreign governments.

Brazil’s naval chiefs are keen to buy the vessel, which has seen active service in the Iraq War and an SAS rescue operation in Sierra Leone.

Its sale will leave the Royal Navy without a carrier of any kind until 2023, when HMS Queen Elizabeth becomes operational.

Brazilian officials say they believe the asking price – a closely-guarded secret – is “reasonable” and they are examining the prospect “with cautious optimism”.

HMS Ocean visited Brazil in 2010 and worked with the country’s marines during a diplomatic mission to South America.

The Brazilian Navy is said to be keen to buy Ocean, currently the largest vessel in the Royal Navy, after deciding not to conduct a costly upgrade one of its ageing carriers.

The MoD would not comment on the ship’s price-tag would but the carrier HMS Illustrious was recently sold to a Turkish recycling yard for just £2million.

HMS Ocean is the UK’s only helicopter carrier and the fleet flagship of the Royal Navy.

She is designed to support amphibious landing operations and took part in the opening hours of the Iraq war when Royal Marines flew out from the carrier to attack enemy positions on the Al Faw peninsular in southern Iraq.

In November 2015, the MoD confirmed that HMS Ocean was to be decommissioned as part of the government’s defence cuts, in 2018.

The vessel, which came into service in 1998, recently completed a £60m refit which would have kept her sea worthy for at least another six years.

Some senior naval officers had hoped that the vessel might be given a reprieve in the same way that RAF Tornado squadrons were extended in service after previously facing the axe.

One senior source said: “Ocean is still a very capable vessel. There is no reason why she could not remain in service until 2023 – the decommissioning will weaken Britain’s defences.”

An MoD spokesman said: “A number of options are being considered for the future of Ocean, including the possibility of selling to another government.

“It is too soon in the process to discuss what those options might be.”

First of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary's new Tide Class ships enters UK for the first time
03/04/2017
The first of the Royal Navy's new support ships, RFA Tidespring, has arrived in the UK ready for the next stage of work which will bring her into service.

The 39,000-tonne tanker will join the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, the civilian-manned fleet which provides support for warships, helping the Royal Navy maintain operations around the world.

Tidespring, which can carry up to 19,000 cubic metres of fuel and 1,300 cubic metres of fresh water, is the first of a fleet of four Tide Class tankers which will all now be taken through customisation work in Falmouth.

She will undergo an intense programme of work at the A&P shipyard, and is expected to enter service before the end of the year.

The new Tide Class tankers will provide key support to the Queen Elizabeth Class carriers when they come into service, alongside the wider fleet

Unbelievable. They just sent a bunch of money on a refit for her to keep her going into the 2020s.

These pols are appalling.

@Obi Wan Russell what are your thoughts on this lunacy?

was due to undertake testing in the spring but “technical issues” have put the date back.

The 65,000 tonne vessel had been due for initial tests early this year as revealed in the Strategic Defence and Security Review published in December.

But Ministers have now revealed that the trials have been put back until the summer – without giving a precise date.

Defence Minister Harriett Baldwin revealed tests are “expected” in the middle of the year.

It comes as Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff for Military Capability, Lt. Gen. Mark Poffley, revealed to a Lords’ committee why a new time-frame had been issued.

He said: “There have been a series of technical issues associated with bringing the vessel to the point where she can commence her sea trials.”
I had hoped we would see her to sea this Spring...but apparently not.

little late now and 80.3 million pounds is 80,300,000 I added a 0 at the end by mistake, I have to correct again I was using an older conversion It should be $100,855,595.50 US.
Current Unit of a F35A is about $94,600,000.00 US.
The low price of the Ocean likely would not cover systems ( comms, Radar, Computers engines), Weapons and of course Aircraft, training. spare parts, and maintenance. which would drive up the cost.
oh and Shiping and handling.
