Hundreds of sailors are preparing to set off on one of the Royal Navy's largest annual deployments.

The Ship's Company of HMS Bulwark is expected to sail from Devonport tonight to lead the major amphibious exercise.

So, down to one flat deck ship that only carries helicopters. With the Harriers decomissioned that's now a long and deep low for UK naval aviaton, unfortunately.
Hopefully, they won't find themselves in the postion to need a carrier for a couple of years. Can't wait for the QE now. What will HMS Ocean be doing after those carriers come online? Hopefully remain in service, so the big carriers can focus on carying aircraft, but with the past in mind, I'm not holding my breath, really.

It would be fantastic if the France cancelled 2nd Mistral ship deal and then sold it to UK.

But, i doubt it would happen as it is not built by workers in the UK.

After recent events and what Russia is doing UK needs two full strength carrier strikes groups

Each CSG

1 x QE carrier
2 x Type 45 DDG
1-2 x Type 26 FFG
1 x Astute Class SSN
And a MARS replenishment tanker

Also RN needs a ASW screen they need P-8 aircraft I know RN is in the US training on the US aircraft

France needs to add that second carrier and build a 4th Mistral Class

Overall between them this is what they should push for

UK
2 x CSG and a amphibious assault group based on the HMS Ocean and 2 x LPD (Bulwark and Albion)

France
2 x CSG and 2 x amphibious assault groups each having 2 x Mistral Class LHD

So together that's 4 x CSG and 3 x ARG that's 7 naval formations

Step up operation and excercises in the Eastern Mediterranean, Baltic Sea, Northern Seas or face losing more land to Russia

Zephyr 7 undergoes testing to receive UK military registration
By: BETH STEVENSONLONDON Source: Flightglobal.com in 3 hours
A recent endurance test of Airbus Defence & Space’s Zephyr 7 high-altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS) resulted in the system becoming the first of its type to receive UK Ministry of Defence military registration.

Zephyr 7 – now designated PS001 – is the first HAPS to be registered in the UK. The type carried out an 11-day non-stop flight in winter conditions, deployed with an undisclosed payload and controlled via satellite communications for the first time.

The approval test was carried out in controlled airspace under the watch of the MoD, the Military Aviation Authority, the Type Airworthiness Authority (TAA) and the unmanned air vehicle arm of the MoD’s Defence Equipment and Support Group.

“This is the first time the UK’s military aviation authorities have expanded our well-proven procedures and regulations into the domain of these novel, long-duration pseudo-satellites,” says Grp Capt Paul Lloyd of the TAA. “It has been both instructive and encouraging to see how effectively the regulations and the Airbus approach to Zephyr were brought together to enable such an operation.”

The Zephyr 7 is solar powered. The type stores solar energy collected during the day and uses it at night to keep the vehicle in the sky.

The test was carried out in winter conditions at an undisclosed location in the southern hemisphere. This meant days were shorter and nights were longer, thus putting more stress on the system.

Testing the beyond-line-of-sight control of PS001 using the satellite communication capability means Zephyrs will be able to operate anywhere in the world, while still being controlled from one central ground station.

The information collected from the flight will be used to develop the Zephyr 8 – the next developmental pseudo-satellite prototype Airbus is working on.

Airbus’ Zephyr prototypes hold the record for the longest flight without refuelling – 14 days – as well as the record for the highest operating altitude of 70,740ft. The system has to date conducted some 850 flight hours.

And then, together with the Mistrals, the british would have to get their Harriers back to service. Even without a ramp, they shold have enough space to get airborne. Unfortunately, it'll remain a dream.
However, one Mistral type ship would be a good idea to have at least two proper aviation capable ships available. On such a ship there should be ample space for Apaches, wich can project a little bit of power by themselves.

No that would not be a good idea to have a air centric LHD

What France really needs is two carrier strike groups with Rafale and two amphibious assault groups each assault group has two Mistral Class LHD one for ASW screen another for troop transport and the Foudre Class LPD lifting the equipment for the assault forces if you try and a squeeze a air component in there you won't do anything well

Each ARG has 2 x LHD and 1 x LPD and there is two such groups plus two full strength carrier strike groups with cats and traps fixed wing AWACS the full package

It's no way possible now the white paper killed the second carrier the 4th Mistral and the LPD units big big mistake by France they will come to regret it if they are not already doing so
