So I just had a wild idea, what if the first ship of this class was nuclear powered?

If it's really going to be like a type 075 with EMALS, all technologies should be mature by the time it comes out.
Making the first one nuclear powered gives them a route to test and validate how to do nuclear propulsion on a big warship.

Then the requirement of an armored reactor comparment would preclude it from being an LHD as there won't be any space for the dock unless you sacrifice aviation facilities, thus you would end with a far more limited LHA. There is also the fact that they are meant to be close to shore for landings, that means they will be exposed to far more threats which seems a bad place overall for a nuclear reactor.

just looked through this thread and apparently its already confirmed to be gas powered, it would still be an interesting idea to just make the first one nuclear, so china can get some hands on experience

On the list of subsystems for it we already know that it will be conventionally powered.

If they want to validate nuclear propulsion better just to do it on a land based site that is representative of the final nuclear propulsion configuration that you want on the ship that you want (in this case, I presume you mean for a CVN).


In short, no need, and if anything may actively be a bad idea with more risk and more cost.
