Type 051 (Luda) Class DDG, News, Pics, info

The Ludas should not be underestimated as warships.

Even if old, they have fairly high grade electronics on them, including a very capable HN-900 datalink, and room for a bunch of AShM. While the YJ-83 is no longer valued within the PLAN, it is still a Harpoon equivalent with excellent electronics and sea skimming capability, if slow. Many navies around the world use weapons of similar advancement as their primary AShM.

Compared to for example the Phillipines navy’s top combatant, the Del Pilar frigates, the Ludas are superior in almost every metric.

A donation of these ships to most third world countries would not simply be an addition to their fleet, but providing a centerpiece for their navy that may be unmatched in the local region.

Scrapping the ships would be a tremendous waste. Perhaps a waste that can be afforded, but shouldn’t be done anyways.

dude, NO the Luda needs to be thrown in the scarp heap long time ago. You might as well mount a YJ-83 on a 25 ft sampan and call it a very useful asset.
You potentially put sailor's lives at risk not to mentioned high operating cost. It does not fit in with any of modern PLAN's modernization and strategic efforts.

It's kinda nostalgic to see them go.

I still remember when I first started to watch Chinese military developments, the Type 051s comprise of most of China's destroyer fleet. Back then I always had the question in mind when will all old 051s be decommissioned. I once thought that day was really far away. Now it's become reality.

Those four destroyers were tied down in Lushun since last year and I doubted they have moved ever since.

Two last Ludas are in Zhanjiang, including the city's own name sake, Zhanjiang, and Zhuhai. I'm inclined to think both will be retired this year.

perhaps the Type 051DT - Kaifeng (109) and Dalian (110) could be offered to friendly nations at very low or donated prices

The living condition, among many other things, onboard 051 is notoriously bad. People literally eat on the deck.

Giving it away would requires a navy large enough to field ~280 men a ship yet cheap enough to be satisfied with a 40-year-old ship that has no mess deck or good air condition.

Couple more I found interesting (apologize for such as in bath. Mod please erase them if inappropriate, or posted before). Indeed 051 is the first ship I start to look at PLAN news. The harder the living condition in old days, actually the more we witness how much progress PLAN had made. It does deserve every credit.

-- the eating and in-bath pictures said to be taken at 1988. I can hardly imagine how it goes at "Mission 508", 1980.

There are friendly nations that have long been using low-priced or donated ships from China that have remedied some shortcomings in terms of living conditions on board.

Therefore the crews are more "accustomed" to these sacrifices, certainly a ship like the 051 can interest only if they are sold at a political price, that is to say almost to zero or donated.
However the 109 is 110, for these nations, they could still make a good contribution
