It seems like each concession made by China was matched with an equivalent concession made by the US, one thing I noticed was that the second point they discussed was China's agreement to pause their new rare earth export restrictions introduced on October 9th was matched with the US side pausing their 50% investment restriction rule. This is something that Trump hasn't mentioned in his description of the things agreed upon in their meeting:

"二、美方将暂停实施其9月29日公布的出口管制50%穿透性规则一年。中方将暂停实施10月9日公布的相关出口管制等措施一年,并将研究细化具体方案。"
When China is trying to help the US save face, leave it to Trump to accidentally reveal the truth by omission.

We can consider the summit a failure for Trump.

Xi Jinping negotiated at least on equal terms, but probably from a position of strength.

Trump initiated a trade war with China in April, starting from a position of strength, and demanded its surrender. Nine months later, he is making concessions in exchange for a fragile truce.

Six months ago, Trump hoped that tariffs would balance the trade imbalance with China and that restrictions on the supply of advanced chips would limit Chinese technological development.

None of the fundamental issues that motivated Trump's trade war were resolved at today's meeting. China simply increased the pressure for this meeting, limiting exports of rare earth metals and magnets, without which Western automobile factories and defense industries would grind to a halt. At the same time, it halted purchases of soybeans from the United States, which put farmers on the brink of ruin.

In his meeting with Trump, Xi simply resumed the positions China held before this tactical escalation. But he made no significant concessions to Trump. Trump, however, reduced tariffs in the name of a truce.

China exploited the weak point of the US and the entire West (note: rare earth elements), and Trump's tariffs did not cause any damage to the Chinese economy.

At the very least, for the next 4 to 5 months, Trump will try not to harm relations with Xi, and no US pressure on China regarding the Ukrainian issue should be expected, nor sanctions against major Chinese buyers for purchasing Russian oil.

All parties knew the outcome beforehand which was nothing significant and Trump just spun it to make it look like a win for him. Apparently Trump thinks doing anything with nukes even no actually nuclear explosion occurring from Russia and China is considered “testing” to him. It should tell you something that it’s a year now and no 90 day deadline for negotiations. He doesn’t like the see-saw happening in the stock market. For stock traders it’s how they make money. They love it. But for Trump it looks like his economy is unstable. Trump can’t go back to the way it was before he returned to office because his trade war has failed and he can’t admit it.

For China, it should deal with Canada and exploit the rift in US relations with one of their largest trading partners. China needs to show other countries they don’t need the US either. That’s how you chip away at the US’s power in the world. But China should be cautious because of the Nexperia situation not transfer its technology so easily.

While America might be fixated on China, China doesn’t just make moves because of America.

One thing that strikes me with this truce is the timing. Right as China is posed to take the proverbial wrecking ball to European manufacturing thanks to Dutch lunacy at the behest of the Americans.

With his much sort after deal in hand, do you think Trump would give that up to stand up for the EuroCucks?

I expect Chinese pressure to increase against the Euros now. China will basically be demanding the impossible from them, without it being obvious to the average European on the streets by demanding settlements in RMB for bilateral trade as one of the many conditions for resuming Chinese critical supplies.

I think China is going to seek to cause real lasting damage to the EU because it has concluded that it’s inevitable that the EU will side with America against China in any hot war. So one less European car factory today is one less tank factory in the future.

Winter has come for the EU.

More than that, China knows that the EU will go running back into America's arms the moment there's a Dem president or a Rep who even remotely approximates sanity. Use the time they're separated from America to stomp them so they're a weaker, more useless ally when the reconciliation occurs.

As others have mentioned already, Trump‘s ”negotiations” amount to nothing and the US comes out worse for it. Everything about MAGA is self destructive. A movement based around promoting the most incompetent, corrupt and cruel people into positions of power will never result in any positive change and will only lead to ruin. That is America’s future under the current Trump regime, and given how deeply ingrained MAGA ideology is in the country I am not sure Democrat electoral victories will result in long term change without radical action.
