China doesn’t need to talk to the US until it takes meaningful measures,” Yuyuantantian said in the post. From a negotiation standpoint, the US is “clearly the more anxious party at the moment,” it added, citing pressure the Trump administration faces on multiple fronts.

The MAGA outlook on this on Facebook is separated into 2 main lines of cope:

1. No pain, no gain; Trump designed this total teardown of the US economy so it can be built back up right. Everything's going according to plan.
2. It's gonna take more than 10 days of Trump's genius to fix 4 years of Brandon's incompetence. Give it time; we're coming right back, baby!

China be like, "Sorry, I have to go home. I have diarrhea."

For those who don't know, this is a Chinese joke for how to back out when your blind date shows up crazy ugly.

MAGAtards are like, "That's because Trump is willing to be the bigger man here and set differences aside for the people while Xi's a dictator and doesn't care how many Chinese starve to death over this."

The thing is according to game theory China can't and shouldnt US let off easily.

By creating such a big loud mess, now all companies will fully accelerate decoupling from China. So why should China let the US off easily?

It will bear so many costs while US gets off easily by just saying "sorry just a mistake, pinky promise won't do it again!"

Nope. China will seek to gain enough strategic level gains of at least equal value to the damage of decoupling of US companies from it

The US believes it can get away with this strategy because it is a financial super power. Companies will be tempted to build their entire supply chains in the US because the US consumer and government subsidies can make it worth their while. Or so the logic goes, it remains to be seen whether there's any actual way this works, since if you don't get enough companies taking the bait, you'll just build a rent seeking industry that survives entirely off of subsidies and the captive market, and which never becomes globally competitive.

China was smart enough not to fall into this trap in most industries, because it strategically used subsidies to create globally competitive companies, and then forced them to compete globally via welcoming world class competitors like Tesla into the domestic market.

The exception is internet companies. Unfortunately, Baidu is a great example of what happens when you only have the first half of the strategy and not the second half. Not having to compete at all with Google, Baidu effectively became just a rent seeking company living off of a captive market and never became globally competitive.
It's not gonna work. Tariffs need to be carefully studied, targeted, and combined with numerous other supporting policies to be effective. It's one tool within the toolchest of industry building, it's not a panacea for a lack of industry. Relying only on tariffs without implementing the rest of the (re)industrialization strategy is how Latin America got stuck in the middle income trap.

China will suffer more in a trade war...? That tells you how Americans see the suffering of others as a measure of themselves winning. Why else would Trump bring it up? That's why I criticize the kumbaya nonsense some Chinese engage in thinking Americans will care if you tell them you're hurting. They enjoy it and will do it more not like how some Chinese think it will make instead stop what they're doing. You only tell them how they'll lose... what they'll lose. How they'll hurt. Here you have Trump appealing to Americans that Chinese are hurting so stick with his plan and don't waver. So do you think playing kumbaya works with these people?
