The remaining factories doing whatever they did with those ICs/electronics will get wrecked, further deindustrializing the US.
They're exempting the expensive bit, the chips/ICs/boards etc, but raising the costs for the other industrial inputs. Even less rationale to assemble any devices in the US anymore.

Because of all this tariff business I placed Art of the Deal onto my reading list, I guess I can take it off again, if all that’s it’s going to teach me is:

Also Scott Bessent, Peter Navarro and all the other hawks were saying this was the plan all along then all I have got to say is that this was a terrible plan.
They basically got nothing of what they wanted but incurred the loathing of the entire world, with many countries now looking to diversify as quickly as possible. Truly a great plan.

Now that you mention it, I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump announces(lie) about have a call with Xi and managed to make a deal for the exemptions.

Speaking of which, that's all the more reasons for China to vastly expand her oceangoing navy. All those deep sea mining sites spread across the "true blue" Pacific and Indian Oceans certainly require protection.
