And going forward, China is projected to account for one-quarter of global growth.
Which is way more influential than the USA.

China urges U.S. to drop Huawei CFO extradition

China's foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying urged the U.S. to correct its mistake and drop the extradition request of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of China's Huawei, on Tuesday.

Her comment came after Canadian media said that the United States will proceed with the formal extradition of Meng from Canada, where she is currently on bail.

The incident is an "abuse of extradition treaties between the U.S. and Canada," Hua said.

Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1, 2018 at the request of U.S. authorities as part of an investigation into an alleged scheme to evade U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Is there a chance of China itself taking hostages in retaliation?

It would be very easy, especially because of Trump family’s ties to Russia.

5 of Ivanka’s brands have been approved in a local court ruling. If China plays as dirty as US, they can launch an investigation into corruption and frame the ruling.

Russian oligarchs can summon her to Russia and then extradite her to Beijing.

better to launch an intelligence operation to return meng in china.

Yeah that wouldn’t be very hard. Just need to get her on a speedboat and into international waters, then the navy can come pick her up.

Nothing says they can’t both take hostages of their own AND attempt hostage rescue.

Meng’s freedom is of secondary concern. A person of her means can get back to China pretty easily even without Chinese state support.

The key issue is that if she runs, she will be committing a crime, thereby making it untenable for her to continue working for Huawei in any capacity.

Running means career suicide, which is what is at stake here.

United States think to punish her with 30 years prison term. It's useful to china that she is a woman and had also a serious disease (tyroid cancer). They shuld use her to criticize usa juditiary and detention system.

Leaving unlawful detention is not a crime.

Arguably, the more high profile a hostage rescue mission is, the better. It will show that criminals can’t flee justice no matter where they go and hugely reinforce the govt’s campaign on upholding rule of law.

And she should continue work for Huawei, but from now on avoid countries with arbitary detention.

I have been reading the blogs in this forum since... definitely more than 10 yrs and I post almost nothing. But today i make an exception. Everyone just relax abit... no one is going to get executed or extradited.... yet. IMO the current situation is a stand-off and poor Canada is stuck in the middle. China is attacking the actual alliance between USA and Canada as an example to other western allies because China probably cant do much about the USA but can influence her allies. China is trying to demonstrate to the western allies the USA had used Canada as something akin to canon fodder because Canada had done USA's bidding at the expense of Canadian citizens being taken "hostage" while no Americans are in danger. China's msg is "If you extradite Meng or convict her, then I will execute the Canadian to make it clear that USA will not even attempt to help you (in significant and practical ways) in this situation". USA and Canada replied "I will extradite Meng and convict her if you execute my citizen". The situation is philosophically similar to the reasons of the sino-vietnamese war. So no rescue for Meng because she is also effectively a hostage too ( as I am sure we are all aware here). She will just have to sit tight and wait it out... same for the Canadians. Besides a hostage is not much use if you actually implement the threat into action. So the basic message between these counties is "Don't Do It"!!!

France, Germany and the UK are creating a special purpose vehicle for European Union companies (and everywhere else in the world ) to continue trade with Iran in the face of the unilateral US sanctions on Iran.

So will Canada start extraditing company executives from the European Union to the USA next?
