BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China is yet to approve U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm Inc's proposed $44 billion acquisition of NXP Semiconductors , three people close to the talks said, dismissing an earlier media report that said Beijing had already greenlit the deal.

Chinese clearance would remove a long-running roadblock to the deal that has become entangled with broader trade tensions between the United States and China. The acquisition has already got a nod from eight of the nine required global regulators, with China being the only hold-out.

Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported on Friday morning that China had given its go-ahead to the deal, citing people with knowledge of the matter, driving up shares of the U.S. firm in extended trade.

But Reuters sources, who are close to the Qualcomm-NXP deal, said they were not aware of any Chinese approval. One of them said planned U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods expected to be unveiled later in the day could impact the process.

Qualcomm did not have an immediate comment on Friday, while NXP did not respond to a request for comment.

China's State Administration for Market Regulation, the regulator which reviews merger deals, did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment.

Qualcomm met with regulators in Beijing last month in a bid to secure a clearance, but sources at the time said an approval would depend on the progress of broader bilateral talks and the U.S. government lifting a crippling supplier ban on telecoms equipment maker ZTE Corp <000063.SZ><0763.HK>.

Washington and Beijing have struck a deal to help ZTE back into business. However, trade talks remain in the balance with U.S. Presi

China vows retaliation for US tariff hike

BEIJING (AP) — China will immediately retaliate against any move by the U.S. to impose punishing tariffs on tens of billions of dollars of Chinese goods, the foreign ministry said Friday.

Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang also said China would cancel any commitments to increase purchases of U.S. exports should tariffs be imposed.

"If the U.S. takes unilateral and protectionist measures that harm China's interests, we will make an immediate response and take necessary measures to defend our legitimate rights and interests," Geng said at a daily briefing.

Geng gave no details. Beijing has drawn up a list of $50 billion in U.S. products that would face retaliatory tariffs, including beef and soybeans — a shot at Trump's supporters in rural America.

Trump reportedly met Thursday with several Cabinet members and trade advisers and was expected to impose tariffs on at least $35 billion to $40 billion of Chinese products as early as Friday.

China had earlier offered to increase purchases of U.S. goods to help defuse the crisis, but Geng said all such proposals would be off the table if Washington went ahead with tariffs.

"We made clear in this statement that all economic and trade outcomes of the talks will not take effect if the U.S. side imposes any trade sanctions, including raising tariffs," Geng said.

Trump threatened to impose tariffs on another $100 billion of Chinese products if China responses with retaliatory action. Imo, there's zero chance China will back down. Looks like a trade war is coming. The only question is how long it will last.

Looks like a trade war is coming? WTF DO YOU MEAN?

IT IS ALREADY HERE.

US just fired the first shot.
EU vows to retaliate in kind in coming days, China will also retaliate soon enough it will bite.

MY PREDICTION:
Trump being a previously near bankrupt businessman, will use his highly tuned business sense to retaliate in kind - believing he has the upper hand.
China will continue to retaliate tit-for-tat.

Now US is back in to a cliff corner all by a single man's making. Then Trump decided to jump off the cliff bringing America with him. US economy collapse, with no recovery in medium to long term as no country would want to trade with US. Meanwhile with US's antagonist attitude towards allies and everyone, the rest of the world flock to trade with China. China's OBOR strategy works and thanks to Trump florished.

THE END. HAPPY ENDING FOR EVERYONE. EXCEPT USA (AND JAPAN BECAUSE JAPAN BEING A LITTLE LAPDOG WOULD SINK TO THE BOTTOM WITH ITS MASTER)

China MOC spokesperson's remarks on U.S. tariff announcement

In response to the U.S. trade measures on China, a spokesperson of China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Friday that the two countries have conducted rounds of consultations on bilateral trade, trying to settle disputes for a win-win result.

"It is deeply regrettable that in disregard of the consensus between the two sides, the U.S. has demonstrated flip-flops and ignited a trade war. This move not only hurts bilateral interests, but also undermines world trade order. The Chinese side firmly opposes that," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that China does not want a trade war. However, confronted by such short-sighted act that hurts both the U.S. itself and others, China has no choice but to fight back forcefully to firmly safeguard the interests of the nation and its people and uphold economic globalization and the multilateral trading system.

"We will immediately take tariff measures of the same scale and intensity. All economic and trade outcomes of previous talks will now lose effect.

"Waging a trade war does not conform to global interests nowadays. We call on all countries to take collective actions to firmly curb such outdated and regressive move and steadfastly safeguard the common interests of the mankind.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang made similar remarks Friday.

Seriously, are you doing this deliberately? This is the second time that you make a false claim.

That would be really nice but I don't think it will be that easy. Maybe if Trump becomes a perpetual US president then it would be much easier to envision what you wrote but as things stand, those countries all just look towards the light at the end of the tunnel, hoping it's 2020 but accepting that it may be 2024 before America gets a sane president whose first order of business in the White House will be to apologize profusely for the freak show that has occurred in the US government starting 2016. They want to ally themselves with the US but Trump is making it just too difficult; they're looking for it to become easier again. In the mean time, a smaller version of what you said, temporary trade deflection away from the US is likely to occur. If, in 2024, another maniac is elected who reflects Trump's values (simply because in a large, emotional and improperly educated crowd, this mistake can recur), then I see those countries losing hope and making more permanent shifts away from the US, setting the events you predicted into action. For now, they still recognize their issues as a personal fight against Trump and his few advisers rather than the lynch mob population that elected him based on angry emotions rather than rational/educated analysis.

Even though democratic government style leads to lack of long-term consistency but in this case, it's good for the US to be able to shift stances every 4 years without embarrassing themselves too badly under the pretenses of the new president disagreeing with the former president.

I'd also like to point out that for now, even Japan is siding against the US with the EU. We'll see how much spine they have to keep fighting for their own interests under Uncle Sam's death glare though...

The bottom line is that China can live without a deal. You climb high, you find yourself a ladder to climb down.
