Both sides are led by old men who reached adulthood in that cold war era. It’s hard to know what they’re thinking and just how outdated they are. I wonder how our mentality will be affected by these events when we get old.

I look forward to the time. If Trump exits and someone who makes sense enters, he can rally Europe against China, which is an incredibly easy task given that the EU was asking to be rallied when Obama was leaving. With Agent Orange, the US goes it alone and has already given up the moral high ground in the eyes of the rest of the world.

I know he's outwardly very nasty to China, but look at what could have happened if a capable US president who didn't divide his country and alienate American allies was elected instead. At the end of Obama's term, China was in a dangerous position and its citizens didn't even know because everyone was friendly, but they were getting into position to surround China with trade attacks. Now, every Chinese citizen is incredibly aware of the dangers yet they have actually ameliorated under a US president with a big mouth who has crippled the European trade front against China. 5 more years is a blessing and an opportunity for China but a curse to be waited out for those in the EU who are still anti-Chinese. For them, they'll have to hold out for another 5 years. If Trump amends the constitution and sets himself up for unlimited terms, the European alliance with the US is broken.

No, Europe wasn't asking to be rallied when Obama left. Europe is still bitterly divided on so many issues, and the situation is only getting worse.

Trump has demonstrated to China, Europe and Asia how how the US has gone completely rogue and is attacking the existing system.

So there could still be a US-Europe agreement on how to deal with China on trade and investment, but it would be premised on a liberal trade and investment order, around the WTO.

That means a a much more reasonable set of asks, and rules out unilateral tariffs in contravention of the WTO, and the separation of national security and economic issues, etc etc

Obama's strategy was TPP and the TTIP, which would have bound most of the world's economic activity to those US-derived rules.
But in the long-run, joining TPP should be in China's interests.

The National Science Foundation reported that China is now spending more on technology R&D than the USA in 2019, and this is still growing rapidly.
And the sheer size of China's domestic market would mean Chinese companies (whether state-owned or private) would expand and become global multi-nationals.

I reckon that in 10 years time, it would be in China's interests to join TPP.
And if the US is still absent, it means everyone in Asia looks to China for global economic leadership, rather than the US.

NB. the chances of Trump amending the US constitution to become President for Life are essentially zero

India likely to join China-Russia call for new trading system on SCO sidelines

The continuing trade war between the US and China and its impact on the global economy will be among the key talking points at the meet, people in the know said.

India is likely to join China and Russia in voicing reservations about US trade protectionism at the SCO summit in Bishkek this week, which will mark prime minister Narendra Modi’s maiden foreign outreach beyond South Asia in his second term.

At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting on June 13-14, leaders of these three nations along with other member states may pitch for a “new type” of multilateral trading system based on rules, people familiar with the issue told ET.

Huawei is sending developers requests to publish on its app store

A trusted developer, who wished to remain anonymous, reached out to us this morning with an email they received from Huawei. The email was an invitation to join AppGallery, an app store that the company says has “270 million monthly active users” on over “350m phones,” about half of which are sold outside of China. The email promises that developers will be provided with “full support” to help them publish their app on AppGallery, but it’s unclear exactly what kind of support will be provided to developers. Lastly, the email mentions a free invitation to a developer community of over “560k”, though we don’t know how active this community really is.

The dementia is getting to him.
Is great this one, I couldn't beleve what I was hearing. He sounds so desperate for a deal, he's now threatening tariffs if Xi dosen't TURN UP, (he's desperate for a one-on-one, never mind making a deal).

He then when on to say China insulted him with the 2025 thing, WHAT! really, the 2025 is an insult, yet the MAGA is not! Trump lives in his own bubble.

Pompeo's words about Huawei are full of lies and fallacies

The Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Geng Shuang said on Monday that the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's words about Huawei and other Chinese companies during the interview with Swiss media is full of lies and fallacies.

Pompeo said earlier that it is difficult for Chinese companies to ensure information security. Cooperation with Chinese companies is equivalent to cooperating with the Chinese government. As long as Huawei communication technology is used, privacy and data protection cannot be guaranteed.

Geng noted that the U.S. claims that Huawei and other Chinese companies have security risks, but they have not provided any evidence about it from beginning to end.

"We have said many times that the U.S. side is using a state machine to suppress Chinese private enterprise such as Huawei, which is unethical and disgraceful," Geng said.

Geng added that even under the suppress of the U.S. side, the situation of Chinese companies is not bad. According to the information from the Huawei website, as of June 6, Huawei has obtained 46 5G commercial contracts in 30 countries around the world. This includes allies and European countries which were persuaded by the United States.

Rumormongering, slandering to end up damaging U.S. credibility: spokesperson

In response to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's recent remarks on Chinese enterprises, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Monday that Pompeo's words are full of lies and fallacies, and that rumormongering and slandering will only end up damaging U.S. credibility in the world.

Spokesperson Geng Shuang made the comments at a press briefing when asked to comment on reports that in an interview with Swiss media, Pompeo claimed once again that Chinese enterprises can not ensure information security and cooperation with them means cooperation with the Chinese government. He said privacy and data protection cannot be guaranteed as long as Huawei's communication technology is used.

Pompeo has for some time constantly referred to China wherever he went, but his remarks were full of lies and fallacies, Geng said, adding that the U.S. side failed to produce convincing evidence for its allegations about "security risks" of Huawei and other Chinese enterprises.

"As we have stated many times, it is both unethical and disgraceful for the U.S. to suppress Huawei, a Chinese private firm, by resorting to state power and state apparatus on trumped-up charges," Geng said.

"I'd like to remind Pompeo that his rhetoric doesn't seem to sell well," Geng said, adding Chinese firms have performed well in spite of the U.S. wanton suppression. "As I learned from Huawei's website, as of June 6, Huawei had concluded 46 commercial contracts on 5G cooperation with 30 countries, including a few allies and European countries the U.S. had 'strenuously' attempted to dissuade from such cooperation."

Geng said that as justice naturally inhabits people's heart, more and more people are showing an objective and unbiased stance on Chinese tech firms' participation in their countries' 5G construction, and an increasing number of countries are independently making choices in line with their own interests.

For Pompeo, "rumormongering, slandering and stirring up trouble everywhere will only end up damaging his own image and reputation, as well as undermining U.S. credibility in the world," Geng said.

The world is so much more unsafe now when you have a President of a major nuclear-armed nation having the temperament of a youngster throwing tantrum every now and then on the slightest agitation.
