It is interesting that while most economies are focussing in how to move up the value chain, Trump is attempting to force the US economy in the other direction. Essentially a of my opposition to Trump's policies stem from me being a US consumer and involvement in the US tech and financial sector, I see myself being directly worse off in the future as a result of his idiotic policies. To me, that's a lot more important than issues like IP theft and China surpassing the US as worlds biggest economy or decline of US power and influence on the international stage.

Th reason is simple. The whole point of Trump being President is that many Americans are still trying to hold on to the America of the past. I don't blame them, they have spent their whole life as a steel worker, coal miner, or auto worker. They know of no lifestyle outside of such industries. But that's just how it is. No matter how powerful trump is or the US government is. They simplt cannot fight against a whole world that's moving forward.

It'd be equivalent of the UK had sided with the Luddites and cotton/linen weavers and shut down the textile mills and turned it's back on industrialization back in eighteenth century.

Well, we *are* talking about a country where about half the population deny climate change, does not believe in evolution, thinks vaccines cause autism, want to outlaw abortion, and believes tariffs are paid by other countries.

My jaw actually dropped when I read that. He must be thinking, "Australia's been just too friendly and cooperative with us; they even banned Huawei. That shows they must have some weakness they don't want us to exploit. Let's push forward and find out what's going on there!"

PS. He's going after India too. He must be thinking things have been going too smoothly between him and Modi.

Trump removes India from special trade status

This just to show Trump is unreliable, i mean after the Aussies bending over backward to please their master, he goes and threaten them with tariffics. Serve them right.

And not to forget the right to bear arms!

That is why moving your factories from China to Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia may not be such a great idea. You won't know when Trump slaps tariffs on them either.

Hit the nail on the head.

The thing is, even if Trump is successful in using tariffs to get American producers to move back to the US, these producers won't be competitive in other world markets. By walling off your market, you also lose access to other markets because that's how the laws of economics work.

He knows that, his horizon is not that long term! He just focusing on the next two years!

And feeling ENTITLED to lead the world because of God and Democracy. That's a fact whether you like it or not. Even before the decline of the British Empire and the collapse of the USSR, we see ourselves as God's chosen people to civilize the rest of the world with liberal political and economic institutions. That's why Bannon argues that the U.S.-China "Cold War" is about a clash between the Confucian culture and the Liberal Judeo-Christian West. While we argue for equality under God and the law, the idea that White Anglo-Saxon American men (WASP) bear the responsibility in civilizing the rest of the world is in itself paternalistic, just like paternalism within Confucianism.

I think the paradox is this: America can and continue to lead the world with its ideology and values, as long as it doesn't force those values and ideology onto others.

Leadership is about exhibiting the merits of your own system and make contributions to your community, and if others see that it's working out great, they will follow you. That's how you lead, in a class, in a sports team, in a company, and in the world.

Once you start doubting yourself, start fearing that others might not follow, start using power to force others to follow, that's when leadership starts to be questioned.
