Something that people should watch. This economist is brilliant and has very clear thoughts. He destroys myths.

Trade for example is independent of economic growth, despite what people want to believe. While the US has a trade deficit with China, China does have a trade deficit with Korea, Japan and Germany, but still grows faster than any of these. Japan has a trade deficit with the US but its economic growth remains very slow.

If the US taxes iPhones, China is in fact the least affected by it. China only gets $8 for each iPhone. Half goes to Taiwan, Korea and Japan, at least $400 goes to the Apple company. If China wants to move away from these suicide causing jobs, and put these jobs in the US, go ahead.

Yea I've seen it.

The big question is if the old people in office wants to YOLO and risk disengagement with China. (Trump already said he doesn't care about climate/debt since he won't be around).

ASEAN is always wary of China, but China is still a neighbor and it's better to get along with your neighbor.

I don't know what kind of world you are living in, but there are new smartphone modem chips that come out every year and they certainly don't take decades to test them.
i'd like to think the principles of the new tech took a decade to refine

They don't take that long either, just as we switched from 2G to 3G to 4G and 5G, not counting there are intermediate steps like 2.5G, 3.5G, and 4.5G, and it didn't take forty to fifty years to do that.

We have SOCs coming out every year or less, and their modems are all built in to them.

Yes, it encourages both invention and innovation, since you reward the inventor and innovator. However, you probably have to limit the cost of licensing but so far the global telecom industry has done a very good job of policing and regulating those IPs. The US though, have a serious problem with patent trolls not seen with anywhere else.

All telecom companies cross license their IPs to each other, and all these IPs are pooled into a common set necessary to create a foundation for the standard.

Do note the difference of things like utility IPs which are basic things needed for every gadget to work, versus design IPs, which is used as a trademark to distinguish one corporate brand from another.

You mean you can hire a grad from uni, and gives to him to design in one year a 3G communication IC?

Good luck.
Will take decade(s) to build the team that can pump out chips in every year.
