U.S. Navy Sailors and guests pose for a photo in front of a P-3C Orion at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island, Washington, during a sundowning ceremony hosted by Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 1, Feb. 20, 2025. The Navy began a seven-year transition from the P-3C Orion to the P-8A Poseidon in 2012. All of the active-duty P-3 squadrons successfully transitioned to the P-8 by the Spring of 2020. VQ-1, the ‘World Watchers,’ flew the P-3C Orion and a series of EP-3 Aries from 1969-2025. The final P-3 on NAS Whidbey Island was utilized by VQ-1 as a pilot proficiency training aircraft. Iwo Jima is with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group conducting Amphibious Squadron Marine Expeditionary Unit Integration Training (PMINT), designed to test the capabilities of the IWO ARG and 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit as a fully-integrated expeditionary force.
