PHILIPPINE SEA (Aug. 26, 2018) The amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) and dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48), both a part of the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), sail alongside the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) amphibious transport dock ship JS Osumi (LST 4001) during a passing exercise (PASSEX). PASSEX enabled the Wasp ARG and the JMSDF a chance to practice communications and maneuvering procedures. The Essex ARG/13th MEU is a capable and lethal Navy-Marine Corps team deployed to the 7th fleet area of operations to support regional stability, reassure partners and allies and maintain a presence postured to respond to any crisis ranging from humanitarian assistance to contingency operations.
