The Blue Ridge Class Command and Control ships (USS Blue Ridge LCC-19, and USS Mount Whitney LCC-20) are large, dedicated Command and Control vessels. Very few (if any) navies have such ships and the US built two, generally one for the Pacific and the other for the Atlantic...actually either side of the CONUS.

They are the most sophisticated Command, Control, Communications, Computer, and Intelligence (C4I) ship ever commissioned...and have been continually updated since they were first deployed with the latest, greates, most advanced and most powerful C4I technology available.

The displace 20,000 tons each and have:

2× Phalanx CIWS 20mm cannons
4× 25 mm Bushmaster cannons
8× .50 cal. Machine guns
Mark 36 SRBOC chaff rockets[/B]

Great and critical vessels. But have to be protected when in proximity to potential foes.

BTW, popeye. 600 more posts and I will join you in the 10,000+ post club! About the time you got to 20,000! LOL!

Thanks for posting Jeff!

USS Blue Ridge LCC-19, and USS Mount Whitney LCC-20 are excellent platforms. However they have been in commission since 1969(LCC 19) & 1971 (LCC 20).

I propose that when USS Peileau (LHA 5) is replaced by America LHA-6 That Peileau remain in commission be turned into a LCC/Sea control ship and replace one of these LCCs. I do not think the USN has any other retired LHAs suitable for this type of duty.

Tarawa class LHAs are very spacious and certainly have enough space and faclicties to support both Sea Controls & LCC missions in my opinion. I've no idea what the cost of converting a Tarawa class LHA to the Sea Control/LCC mission would be.

These ships are very flexible platforms and could remain in service for years to come.

edit.. I just read that Nassau (LHA 4) is being held in reserve. She could possibly be returned to service.

From your keyboard to God's ear my friend.

Peileau and Nassau would make EXCELLENT replacements for Blue Ridge and Mount Whitney.

In fact, they are twice as big and could therefore offer even more capabilites.

Many people are unaware that the Soviets built and deployed a single, large, modern, dedicated command ship. It was nuclear powered and was built on a Kirov nuclear battlecruiser hull.

It was impressive and at the time, everyone thought the Soviets woud build at least one more, like the US. It was built from 1981-1983, and launched in 1983. Finally commissioned in 1989 with a lot of their highest tech C4I gear...but then the Soviet Union fell so its life was VERY short lived.

She had a fire onboard in 1990 that damaged the aft engine room (one of the two conventional boilers that assisted the nuclear propulsion), and then broke free during a strom in 1991 and drifted out to sea suffering further damage. She was repaired enough to operate her radars in port, but then in 2001 was completely laid up as too expensive to operate. Another storm in 2008 damaged her main radar dome (as you can see in the 3rd picture). She has laid up in a basic state of disrepair ever since, and either has already been, or may soon be scrapped.

She displaced 36,500 tons full load, and lightly armed too.

2 x 76mm guns
4 x 30mm CIWS (AK-630)
4 x 12.7mm MG
16 x SA-18 SR AAW missiles (4 quadruple mounts)
It has a helo deck and hanger.

umm NO. Also the steam disperses very quickly so it would be futile.

You can launch things off the catapult though! That's fun! It's call boot shoot. Where you launch your boondockers from the shuttle! Most carriers do it during their Tiger Cruises.
