NORFOLK
Hundreds of sailors packed a Norfolk Naval Station auditorium this morning to honor Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark Mayo, the military police officer who was shot and killed last month aboard the destroyer Mahan.
"He gave his life protecting the lives of others," said Capt. Robert Clark, the base's commanding officer. "This kind of courage cannot be taught."
To Mayo's parents, Clark said, "Thank you for providing to the U.S. Navy a man of his character."
Mayo, who was 24 and from Hagerstown, Md., was killed the night of March 24. He was attempting to help another sailor who had been in a struggle with a civilian truck driver, Jeffrey Savage, who wasn't supposed to be on the base, officials have said.
Unarmed, Savage got through a main gate and a pier checkpoint before he boarded the Mahan. He disarmed a sailor on the ship who tried to stop him, and shot Mayo when he intervened. Other responders killed Savage.
The Navy is investigating what happened. It's not clear why Savage went to the Mahan.
Mayo enlisted in the Navy shortly after high school in 2007. He served in Bahrain and Spain before coming to Norfolk in 2011.
Mayo's family attended the memorial service. They are holding a private funeral Friday.
Mayo will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
