The basic principles of online disinformation - that is, controlling outcomes of online interactions and manipulating popular views - are well-known to be commonly employed by both government-sponsored propagandists and decentralized troll organizations.

FVEY are one of the least-discussed forces that effectively practice these tactics globally, since their intelligence agencies pioneered the modern study of disinformation in the West through conducting unethical psychological research during the Cold War (the most infamous example being MKUltra). Here are a number of Snowden-leaked slides that illustrate the depth and complexity of this subversive discipline:

Of course, these principles of group psychology apply not only to the organized manipulation of views, but also the organic creation and enforcement of echo chambers. Hence it may be desirable for online forum users to shield themselves individually as a protective measure against the exacerbating effects of forum community features such as voting, seniority, and ranks.

These forum-specific AdBlock filters help to achieve this end, and are compatible with every AdBlock browser extension that allows setting custom filters. Disabling certain notifications and utilizing available privacy settings may also be worthy of consideration.

I don't like foul language. I don't curse at all. I haven't for many years . I can't stand it. It is detestable that people curse in public now a days. Disgusting. More & more members of SDF are using foul language in this forum.

The rules that Jeff and I wrote state;

DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Post any swearing, foul language (damn, hell & ass are permissible) or any sexually explicit terms. Do not use them for user names. . Do not posts asterisks in place of the letters to try and get around this rule.
I know with only two active mods it is difficult to enforce this rule.

Starting on Sunday I will be out out of the forum for about three weeks. Well actually off and on. We have a major meeting in our church Sunday thru Wednesday and then I'm going to San Diego for my granddaughter's 18th birthday & High School graduation...I should be back around the 12th of June.

The closing of the Huawei and Trade War threads is unsurprising given the low-quality, vacuous political takes that cluttered them. There are more appropriate spaces online for that kind of nationalistic validation-seeking, which seemed to be the only goal for many rather than engaging in substantive analysis (preferably as dispassionate and objective as possible regardless of where one's sympathies may lie). Also seemed like few ever read past the last 1 to 2 pages as shown by the sheer number of repeated questions, despite multiple pages of highly relevant discussion being available from the same day or two.

The purpose of a forum is for people to exchange ideas. There are other resources online if you just want to read academic analyses.

Of course, there is a line between meaningful discussion and pointless bickering, and that's where the moderators come in. However, it should be noted that just because one person is not interested in a discussion does not mean it is not meaningful for others.

Much of the thread's recent posts consisted of nothing more than political soapboxing, essentially rehashing over and over again that the US is attempting to contain China. I am not asking for professional academic analyses, but instead more discussion that contains substance rather than empty polemics about how the US is malevolent/clueless and China must stand up/wake up. I seriously don't understand why anyone wants to read just that x100 posts if not solely to seek a kind of psychological validation reminiscent of the reasons that people seek comfort in echo chambers. If you want that kind of discussion there is always Reddit, as I know there is significant overlap between certain communities there and SDF users.

Yep...I stopped swearing back just before I retired from the US Navy..because Jesus changed my heart. It is written;

Ephesians 4:29-32 New King James Version (NKJV)

29) Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary [a]edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30) And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31) Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32) And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

If you don't want to read it, just skip those posts.

Part of the requirement for a conversation is that you need to let other people say their piece, whether you want to hear it or not.

I find that the moderators do a good job of stopping the rhetorics from getting out of hand, which is why I keep coming back here.
