If someone waiting for you on the other side... nothing can pass. Loosing one side of the dam is one thing, the dam blowing up is another.
hopefully they can hold the chokepoint, but at least they'll be less scared of the dam breaking and destroying Kherson if they don't occupy Kherson.

What are the prospect of Russia blow the dam themselves to drown the defenders should they want to retake Kherson?
War crime. Not that anyone has the capability to prosecute Russians but it would look bad for their propaganda campaign to get more Ukrainians to flee to Russia for the demographic attrition part of the war.

Losing Kherson is a major strategic loss. The only way to make this up is if they use the forces freed up to go on the offensive elsewhere, cut the bridges across the Dnieper as much as possible, and take rest of Donbass + push up the east bank of the Dnieper towards Zaphorizhia city.

I'm surprised only 80k loyalist citizens are evacuating. Kherson had a population of 280k.

At least 115k has evacuated and its still ongoing.

Reviewing footage of UAV strikes, the one that took down the Krab appears to be a shorter X winged version of the Lancet.

This one taking out the MLRS leaves no doubt the drone tracks and repositions itself against moving target which in this case the MLRS doing a shoot and scoot. Again this one is the shorter X winged Lancet version. The initial strike is quickly followed by a second strike.

They could always try false flagging it and blame AFU.

Still not sure what to make of the supposed withdrawal. They were trolling with that once already.

Is not unheard off. The main reason the dam didn't fail is because one of the bombs was a dud.

International law does point out it is a war crime if it causes the release of water with disregard for the life of civilians, which maybe puts Kherson in a grey area if it's empty.

That said, the Russians get accused of war crimes anyway while the Ukranians execute their own people without anyone batting an eyelid, so what gives.
