The War in the Ukraine

Russia has no strategy in Ukraine. At first they were hoping that Ukraine would collapse within few days or weeks but that didn't happen.
And now Russia doesn't seem to be capable of significantly increasing their troop numbers, probably because a good portion of the Russian military are conscripts (possibly bigger than the official numbers) and they don't want to send conscripts.
If Russia wanted to depopulate Ukraine then they would have done it already by carpet bombing every city so the civilians would run away, They didn't do that.

Russia is still hanging to the dear SMO hoping that the use of limited force while being vastly outnumbered will win them the war...
it seems like dragging this on is the strategy, though counterintuitive because it is never a good thing to drag on military operations. putin seems to think that he can outlast the west given the current economic and political climate. there are a few important junctions that he is looking at:

1. europe not being able to survive this winter. it might have enough gas to keep residents somewhat warm but that will likely come at the cost of shutting down a lot of its factories, leading to economic ruin.
2. US stagflation, a byproduct of the energy price and europe's misfortune. putin wants to see if persistent inflation and reduced trade with europe would push US economy into a recession, which in turn would lead to a biden defeat in the midterms and a divided political landscape. he can then look further out to trump's return (which i think is what he is holding out the greatest hope for)
3. all of the above leading to a rise of nationalism and fragmentation in western society, which tends to favor russia (e.g. lepen).
4. something breaks somewhere else and distracts the west from ukraine. pelosi's trip to taiwan and the subsequent tension shows that it is not beyond the realm of possibility.

i think some of these hopes are legitimate and others are misplaced. putin runs the risk of underestimating how much pain the west can take, and how much patience china has irt taiwan.

There news now of Georgians making a move over Abkhazia. If its true, along with the resurging conflict between Armenia and Arzebaijan could point as one of the reasons why Russia might have decided against going all in and might have expected NATO to reignite conflicts were Russians were already involved in.

As a matter of fact, the Ukranians a few days ago asked the Georgians(as you do when you are totally winning) to open a second front. Of course, is still Russia's leadership fault for pussyfooting around when it should have gone for Ukranian leadership and entire infrastructure from the start.
perhaps zelensky and biden think they are brilliant strategists with this second front thing, but i think it would be a terrible miscalculation.

one it is much easier for kadyrov to intervene in the caucusus. and more importantly, russia did not declare war on ukraine, but by making it seem like russia is under a military siege, georgia could put it on a war footing, and there is no way georgia can resist the russians. just look at a map and see how close the south ossetian border is to Tbilisi. i doubt georgia will want to commit too many troops westward to abkhazia and have the russians in its capital in two days.

I see footage like water flooding the map dividing the ukrainian forces, some ukrainian tank or IFV drivers running over his own crew, air strikes, kalibr stikes and chechen reinforcements on their way, etc. Ukrainians use to upload alot at the start of the war did Russia go NATO style or something knocking out their power?

Not much has happened for the last couple days after blowing up a couple power plants and some dams.

Nothing in modern society works without electricity. No oil refining, no modern agriculture, no water pumping and filtration, no schools, no hospitals, no nothing. Russia don't need to go after many targets. Only taking out the few power plants is enough to cripple Ukraine back to middle ages.

Maybe Putin is waiting for winter to inflict maximum pain and return Ukraine to the Middle Ages.

Millions of Ukrainians will probably storm the borders to the EU again, but, unfortunately, Europe will also be in an energy crisis, with a heap of problems with its own disgruntled population.

There were protests again today in Paris and Vienna. There are now regular protests in European capitals at weekends. Parisians demanded Macron's resignation, chanted for France to leave NATO and for sanctions against Russia to be lifted.

One thing is for sure - it will be an interesting winter on the European continent.

Most of the Ukrainian refugees were accepted by Russia. And this is UN data.

Nearly 2.6 million residents of Ukraine have chosen Russia as a refuge.

About 6 million refugees from Ukraine have entered Poland since February 24, but more than 4 million of them have returned, and 500 thousand have moved to other countries. Thus, a million and a little remained in Poland itself.

Warsaw was one of the first in the EU to curtail support programs for Ukrainians and close temporary camps. At the same time, Poland does not forget to demand subsidies from the European Parliament for its expenses on "good neighborliness".

The loudest "friends of Ukraine" — Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia — hosted 158 thousand people for three.

Top 10 countries with the number of registered Ukrainian refugees as of the first half of September:
Russia, Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Turkey, Spain, UK, Slovakia.

I'm no engineer but is it feasible to put slabs of steel on the Kherson bridge, so that it acts as a shield to a pontoon bridge underneath? That way, if HIMARS hits the Kherson bridge, it cannot damage the steel, which ensures safety of the pontoon bridge underneath.
Depending on the warhead being used, no.

Also, the whole reason why they are resorting to pontoon bridge is because the actual concrete bridge was structurally damaged enough to no longer be able to carry heavy traffics. Now imagine putting a bunch of heavy metal slabs on the said bridge and adding to the deadload of the said bridge.
