@Rybar:

Destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP: what is known as of 15:00

▪️Authorities of the Kherson region announced preparations for the evacuation of residents of the Novokahovsky, Golopristansky and Aleshkinsky districts. At the same time, in Novaya Kakhovka, the water has already risen to a level of more than 11 meters.

▪️ The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, said that the water level for cooling the ZNPP is falling, but there are alternative reservoirs. At the same time, a representative of the nuclear power plant pointed to the preservation of the water level in the cooling pond at the previous level of 16.67 meters.

▪️ Ukrainian authorities reported that 150 tons of engine oil had entered the Dnieper. At the same time, at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, the likelihood of up to 300 tons of oil getting into the river was discussed.

▪️ Representatives of Ukraine initiated a meeting of the UN Security Council because of the destruction of the dam and called on the G7 countries and the EU to immediately consider imposing new sanctions on the Russian Federation.

Statements of foreign leaders

▪️German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the disaster at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station a "new dimension" of the conflict and said that Berlin would continue to help Ukraine.

▪️ NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg pointed out that the destruction of the dam once again demonstrates the brutality of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

▪️ The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, blamed Russia for the incident and pointed to bringing all those involved in the incident to justice.

▪️ Similar rhetoric was also heard from Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipovsky, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and others.

The leadership of the Western countries, in the usual manner, made harsh accusations of Russia being involved in the creation of a humanitarian catastrophe. They do not provide evidence for their words, and they do not need them when a new reason has appeared to criticize the Russian authorities. At the same time, they are clearly not going to recall the regular shelling of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station by Ukrainian formations, as well as the tests of the AFU to destroy the dam.

The plant is on the east bank and would certainly be used for Russia in the future if they keep it. That plant would power Crimea big time. If water remain high enough and the lower dam structure is guaranteed to hold, they could restart it but incertainty means the plant is gone on paper for a long time.
Crimea does not need the nuclear generation capacity of the plant since it has its own gas power plants with pipelines going directly to Russia over Kerch Strait. Plus underwater electric power lines.

The Donbass is connected directly to Russia's power grid as well. So this nuclear power plant would have basically been powering Melitopol and that area. Available capacity is more than sufficient.

The concern then would be water as there is nothing can beat the gravity canal from Dnepr river.

Also i heard that the lowering water level of Dnepr near Energodar can actually benefit Ukraine potential offensive attempt, i wonder how long until they could actually tries to establish bridgehead.

Back in WW2 both the Axis and the Allies bombed dams. The bombing of the dams in the Ruhr valley is one example.

The main issue this will cause, I think, is that Russia will have to stop irrigation for farming in the southern sections they currently control including Crimea. This will have significant economic impact for people who live in those regions and work in agriculture. It won't affect Russia's ability to feed itself however since they have huge excess production.
