The War in the Ukraine

Ex-Deputy Defense Minister Mizintsev, who was responsible for logistics of the Russian AF since last September, has been Prigozhyn's ally all along, helping him obtain all sorts of equipment and supplies. That is, until Shoigu fired him. Mizintsev holds the rank of Colonel General, is also known as the Butcher of Mariupol, as he led the Russian forces to take that city. In my view, the recent firing of Mizintsev by Shoigu was one of the factors that ticked Prigozhyn off. After being fired, Mizintsev is now hired as the deputy commander of the Wagner forces, even though Wagner has had their shortages when Russian AF logistics was under Mizintsev's reign.

The video mentioned that Mizintsev was among several generals that advocated turning Wagner into a full force, which at 40 to 55 thousand, depending on whose estimates you are following, is the size of a full army corp. Wagner used to be only 8,000 to 10,000, barely more than a brigade. I wonder who the other generals be.

Makes me wonder how many ex-generals might be working in Wagner. Serdyukov, who was the ex-commander of the VDV? He held that position till June of 2022, a Hero of Russia and was the mastermind in the Russian takeover of Crimea in 2014. Teplinsky aka Butcher of Bucha (don't you love those ominous nicknames), replaced Serdyukov in June only to be fired last January during which he oversaw the defense of Kherson campaign. Recently Teplinsky has returned to service to once again lead the VDV although I do wonder what was he doing in the last three months.

CNN reports about claims of Russia getting better at jamming the guidance systems of the GMLRS from the HIMARS

The medium-range rocket systems were hailed as a game changer in the conflict and have played a key role since the moment they arrived in Ukraine last summer, including in last year’s offensive that allowed Ukraine to take back significant swaths of territory from Russia.

But in recent months, the systems have been rendered increasingly less effective by the Russians’ intensive blocking, five US, British and Ukrainian sources tell CNN, forcing US and Ukrainian officials to find ways to tweak the HIMARS’ software to counter the evolving Russian jamming efforts.

“It is a constant cat-and-mouse game” of finding a countermeasure to the jamming, a Pentagon official said, only to then have the Russians counteract that countermeasure. And it is not clear how sustainable that game is in the long term.

What do you think of this speculation?

Personally, I have also long been under the impression from what I have read on several of the popular Russian military Telegram channels that there is internal friction over how to conduct the special military operation. On one side are Shoigu and Gerasimov, on the other Prigozhin, Kadyrov and Surovikin.

These personalities are not comparable and neither can replace each other. Shoigu was always more of a manager. He is a civilian. He used to be in control of the emergency services before heading the defense ministry. Gerasimov is a bona fide military general who studied at the top armored warfare school in Russia. Prigozhin is likely just a figurehead for several government initiatives. He is a businessman who used to run restaurants and grocery stores. Kadyrov is the de facto leader of Chechnya, with considerable autonomy from the main government. Surovikin is an army general which had a family history related to the air force.

I don't think Chechens can actually replace Wagner anyhow, to achieve what they had in Bakhmut so far they had to massively expand Wagner to a force of 40-50k. Chechen forces in Ukraine are not even 10k. Most of the slack will be picked up by RU armed forces while Kadyrov gets credit.
