Poland to transfer 60 PT-91 Twardy tanks to Ukraine, says Polish PM
Morawiecki said the tanks would be delivered to Ukraine “within a few days,” as reported by Polish news agency PAP.
PT-91 Twardy is a Polish tank designed on the basis of the T-72M1 tank. It has its own DRAWA fire control system and ERAWA dynamic protection.
The PT-91 was one of Poland's most advanced tanks. It is basically a T-72 with thermal sights, ERA, and 1000hp engine upgrade. ERAWA-2 ERA allegedly degrades HEAT by 50-70% and APFSDS by 30-40%. This is almost as good as Kontakt-5. That would make it only marginally worse in hard stats than your average T-72B3. Poland had 232 PT-91 tanks before the conflict in Ukraine started. These aren't the first PT-91 tanks the Poles sent into Ukraine either.
Then there is this...
"It will be recalled that in June the President of Poland Andrzej Duda said that Ukraine received more than 240 Polish T-72 tanks."
That would be the earlier T-72M1 model. Even if they add Kontakt-1 equivalent ERA to them it would make them equivalent at best to the T-72A of Soviet era.
I think it would be correct to assume Poland will run out of PT-91 and T-72M1s before the current year runs out. And thus far they got like 10 K2 Black Panther and 28 M1 Abrams to replace those tanks. Just for info it took the Poles some 4 years to upgrade 34 Leopard 2 tanks to Leopard 2PL standard. And the South Koreans produce the K2 at a rate of like 50 tanks a year.
