Crazy idea but I believe Putin is trying to garner religious outrage towards the Ukrainians. If I recall correctly, several months ago, the Russian leadership and media outlets claimed that they were fighting Satanists in Ukraine most likely in order to recruit more volunteers for their armed forces. Naturally, people would think that sounds dumb. Now, imagine the outrage that would happen if Ukrainian artillery hit a huge congregation of Russian soldiers who were celebrating Christmas. There is a good chance that Russian Orthodox followers are going to call for a holy war against Ukraine. This, to me, further proves that Russia is having manpower issues.
Why is he so obviously trolling and throwing. It's not even the big christmas holiday.
I start to feel that maybe not all of Russian politicans wanted to fight this war. They might have been maneuvered into to doing it in order to cut their ties with the west, but some of their politicians are throwing a tantrum over it, hampering the war effort and wasting their own men to protest the fact their connected elites don't get to cosplay rich westerners anymore.

The gist of it is basically modern phones capture location data in the photos and videos it takes, that is how you are able to sort photos by locations in Google photos for example. this is of course able to be turned of via settings or sanitised after fact, why this wasn't done is probably because not everyone is super tech savvy. You can pull location data from phone photos.
Another avenue of Intel is public posting from your device on platforms such as twitter WITHOUT turning off location tracking, making your location for the world to see.
Last but not least is posting pictures online, which can easily reveal your location through identifiable features.
