The sinking of South Korean Corvette Cheonan

If revenge/a greater goal doesn't factor into this the only reason that I see for a potential North Korean attack will be weapons testing. The North Korean Navy is ill-equipped compared to its Southern counterpart and it is only logical for them to improve their naval capabilities. I guess that they thought human torpedoes will offer a low tech and cost-effective solution to this problem.

Another "odd" snippet from the Korean papers. All survivors of the disaster are being kept sequestered. Very strange.

Shipwreck Survivors Prevented from Telling Their Story

The military has kept preventing the survivors of the sunken Navy corvette Cheonan from communicating with the outside world since the incident Friday. All 52 survivors except for six officers including Captain Choi Won-il are hospitalized in the Armed Forces Capital Hospital in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.

According to a report by the Defense Ministry Monday, 44 are injured, four of them seriously. But the military is keeping even those with light or no injuries at the hospital.

The hospital strictly limits media access, allowing only visits by family members. "We got an order from the spokesman's office of the ministry to remain tight-lipped," a hospital staffer said. The Navy explained this is a necessary measure for psychological wellbeing of the survivors, but there is speculation that the aim is to prevent information about the incident coming out.

The military believes piecemeal information delivered by the survivors will not help the government’s efforts to get to the bottom of the disaster, but the opposition argues that testimony from the survivors will be helpful in establishing the cause of the sinking and assist rescue efforts.

Some family members of the survivors are saying that the survivors are not telling them about the moment when the ship started sinking. They say they do not know whether this is because they simply do not remember because of the shock, or whether the military told them to keep mum. The military is also not permitting outside doctors to treat the injured soldiers.

Prof. Ha Ji-hyun at the Department of Psychiatry at Konkuk University Medical Center, said, "When a person who survived a major catastrophe and sustained serious psychological shock returns home and stays there alone, they may experience guilt and paranoia. The survivors can recover at a much greater speed if they share their experiences and communicate with other survivors."

Some argue that the survivors will be vulnerable to greater psychological shock if they are exposed to the public before they have come to terms with the incident. But other experts say the isolation could discourage survivors form telling the truth about the incident.

The Navy has apparently ordered Patrol Boat 501, which rescued 56 survivors soon after the incident, not to ask any questions to the survivors and isolate them until Navy officers reach the site. Captain Choi delivered the order to the survivors gathered together and he reportedly told them to keep their mouths shut.

This, combined with the fact that shots were fired by South Korean ships during the incident, seems to indicate coverup. Perhaps the South Korean governments decided to keep this a secret for "the greater good" after receiving pressure from the United States or China?

I think it's just as great a possibility that either a fatal accident occurred on-board or maybe they hit their own mine. Does anyone know if SK mines those waters. It was no error that SK news had a graphic of a Chinese 051 sinking. Already smells of embarrassment. Don't forget political exploitation. The opposition party wants answers?

Generally speaking, countries that have been the victim of others aggression are not shy about shouting it from the rooftops. Likewise the North Koreans usually revel in any "victory" over the "imperialists and their lackeys".

Likewise, when countries stay quiet over an incident, it is equally indicative of something secret and secret in a guilty sense.

Well, at this time of the year, the waters flow from South to North in the yellow sea, as indicated by the drifting of the Aft wreakage of the ship (5 miles off I think). So a South korean mine is a possibility.

Further, with a small vessel like this, it's armed with two aft guns, depth charges and missiles, any munition mishaps would be devastating. Artillery shells going off isn't uncommon.

South Korea's defence minister has renewed speculation a torpedo could have caused the blast that sank a warship off its coast last week.

Kim Tae-young said it was a "likely possibility" the Cheonan had been hit by such a missile, but that all possibilities needed to be considered.

Mr Kim did not say who would have fired a torpedo or under what circumstances it could have happened.

hmmmmm.................

Since the South Korean minister mentioned that torpedoes are a possibility but didn't state the source of the attack, is it safe for us to assume that a South Korean torpedo is responsible for the incident? Perhaps the South Koreans thought that they were under attack and a torpedo malfunctioned and sunk Chenoan?

Reported from the Chonsun Ilbo, one of the major newspapers in South Korea:

Immediately after an explosion that caused the 1,200-ton corvette Cheonan to sink in waters near the de-facto maritime border with North Korea on March 26, the Captain sent out a message to the Second Navy Fleet Command, saying, "We are being attacked by the enemy."

A military source on Thursday said Captain Choi Won-il sent the message using his mobile phone, according to analysis of communications records. Choi sent the report after confirming that the stern had broken off following the explosion around 9:25 p.m. It is not clear how much information he had at the time.

Military authorities on Thursday gave an official briefing on several points but failed to mention Choi's initial report. They revealed only excerpts of some records of communications exchanged between the ship and command.

...

Another Navy corvette, the Sokcho, reportedly fired shells from 76 mm guns at an unidentified object running north at a speed of 42 knots from the northern side of Baeknyeong Island because it believed it was a North Korean boat that was fleeing after attacking the Cheonan. But according to the military it proved to be a flock of birds.

I can't say for sure, but it seems like there is a military cover-up. Why not mention the captain's mobile phone communication? It seems like a critical bit of information. I don't think a captain would just lie about that, would he?

It seems like the captain was reporting an attack.
