War II were actually recruited, contracted sex workers generated international controversy, academic criticism, and student petitions at Harvard this week.
The paper, “Contracting for Sex in the Pacific War,” made headlines across South Korean media and was met with widespread public anger. Ramseyer’s work is set to be published in the March issue of the International Review of Law and Economics. Korean outlets picked up the news after Ramseyer’s paper was featured in a Jan. 28 press release in Sankei Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper.
Well-known worldwide for its conservative, nationalist bent, Sankei shared Ramseyer’s abstract with his permission, while adding that memorials to “comfort women” across Asia have spread a “false image” of Japan.
“Comfort women” — a loose translation of a Japanese euphemism for “prostitute” — refers to women and girls forced into sex slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army. Comfort women were held at brothels, or “comfort stations,” adjacent to Japanese military facilities to serve soldiers. The number of women enslaved from Japan’s occupied territories is disputed, but estimates range from the tens of thousands to up to 410,000, with many being of Korean descent.
Since World War II, Japan has propped up and dissolved compensation funds, dealt with lawsuits and investigations, and issued and walked back apologies to comfort women. Of the few surviving comfort women today, many have said they are still waiting for justice.
The U.N. Commission on Human Rights, Amnesty International, and many notable scholars in Korea, Japan, the United States, and other countries have published extensive reports documenting the explicit sexual slavery of comfort women.
Ramseyer argues in his paper that comfort women were not coerced, but voluntarily employed under the terms of a contract.
Based on the title of Ramseyer’s professorship — the Mitsubishi Professor of Japanese Legal Studies — many Korean media outlets and scholars suspected that he may be sponsored by the Japanese corporation.
Yuji Hosaka — a political science professor at Sejong University in Seoul often cited in Korean press — suggested in an interview the possibility that Mitsubishi donated money to the University to establish the professorship and give Ramseyer this role.

China is our neighbor. A nation bullied by Europeans and Americans for a long, long time. Invaded, divided, enslaved and disrespected by evil foriegn forces, now it has become a full grown Dragon. China is not just a Military Super Power. It is the Number One Economic Super Power in the world.
The United States was once our invader. Today, they are our "friend" and "ally", at least on paper. The US has been invading countries around the world since World War 2. They invaded Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan and many more. Needless to say, USA is the mightiest Military Super Power on Earth.
It's no secret the US has been trying to undermine China's economic and military growth for many decades now. It's also no secret China is determined to fight back regardless. Both have stockpile of Nuclear bombs.
The South China sea is now the center of a cold war between US and China. The US submarines are lurking in there loaded with Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles with nuclear war heads. This makes China very nervous. They need to build fake islands as first line of Defence.
Enter the Philippines. A nation who cannot defeat a local rebellion for 52 long years. A rebellion composed merely by college students recruited by CPP-NPA-NDF through LFS, CEGP, Anakbayan and Gabriela. A nation with deep problems of corruption. A nation who just started building up its Military might.
The Philippines has no business picking a fight with Asian neighbors. It can not even take back Sabah from the hands of Malaysia. Yet Philippine Media has been pushing Duterte Government to mess with China.
Enter the VFA! The US wants to bring their war toys at a striking distance near China. VFA is a good excuse for US to sail along South China Sea with their mighty Aircraft Carriers and all kinds of warships armed with Nuclear bombs. China will surely not like it to put it mildly. Imagine an enemy armed to the teeth, whistling and strolling near your fence. China will never hessitate assigning a couple nukes to Manila for inviting the US nearby.
The US is obviously using Philippines as their first line of offense and defense against China. They already did that when the US Subic Naval Base and Clark Airbase were used as launching pads against Vietnam and Cambodia back in the 70s.
The tens of thousands of bombs killed hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese and Cambodian women and children. All via Subic and Clark airbase. Yes, we allowed our country to be used in killing our own Asians brothers. This won't happen in Digong's watch. He is a Filipino and an Asian by heart. Never an American puppet.
VFA is all about provoking China. US have no plans making our Military great. They denied selling us modern war equipment many times. Our 100 years of military alliance with the US is nothing but FAKE NEWS. The Billions of Dollars of US Military Aid to Philippines are all PR stunts. Our local media are mostly on CIAs payroll.
So why would we risks a war with a mighty Dragon with Nukes if we can barely eradicate our own local rebellion? Why should we continue a Super risky Military alliance with Uncle Sam who deprived us even the purchase Helicopters and M-16 Armalites?
Digong is right. VFA is not for our best interest as a nation. Asking for payment for VFA is a polite way of saying no. We cannot involve our selves in a fight among giants. Better stay neutral and take care of our own local problem first, especialy rebellion.
Yes, maintaining friendship with both China and US is a no brainer. It is both beneficial economically and militarily. Some call Duterte's gambit a genius move. Some call it diplomacy brilliance. Some call it clever and wise dicision. I call it BASIC COMMON SENSE.

A little history , There are 2 military agreements and a treaty.
The 1951 mutual defense treaty guarantee the defense of the Philippine if attack by the US, put that treaty doesn't include the SCS . When the bases was removed by our senate then President Ramos sign an agreement for a VFA, to allow the American to enter Phil jurisdiction use our bases temporarily, while the recently sign EDCA during the Aquino administration is for the storage of weapons as a staging area in the Philippines. Of the three VFA is the most important and can be rescind by the President using an executive order, without it the American can't enter and use those equipment store in forward bases.
Now Duterte had shown his card and is adhering to an independent foreign policy, he never trusted the American ever since an incident in Davao where a CIA operative in the name of MICHAEL Meiring who is making a bomb had an accident explosion inside the hotel where he is staying. While recovering in the hospital, Duterte want to interrogate him about the incident But he never got the chance. Meiring was spirited out of the hospital just a day later, allegedly by U.S. operatives and embassy personnel . It shows that the American never respect the sovereignty of our country and can act with impunity knowingly that they are untouchable by our legal system.
In conclusion: Duterte will say no to any American adventurism in the SCS , he had the means to do it (VFA cancellation) and the ASEAN agreed with him. He will be called a traitor by those people that wanted him to implement the SCS arbitration award which if you studied the case is a net loss for us (devaluing our claim in the area), only the US and her allies gain by allowing the FON patrol. But There will be peace in the SCS, a COC will be introduce that will satisfy all side, and a gas agreement with China which is favorable to the Philippine will be drill in the SCS near the Philippine economic zone. That is why now and then you will hear and read about negative news coming from western media about our fishermen being harass by the Chinese coast guard, they really want to derail the COC cause if sign it will nullify and make a mockery of the US navy FON.
