During their podcast on may 8th, Yankee and Shilao implied that during a massive air live fire excerise back in 2016, an unmanned j-7 drone continued increased its speed to mach 2.08 after it was hit by a missile. Does anyone have credible source on this info?
Maximum speed is mach 2 in a dive it could probably go faster. In any case numerous aircraft can go faster than listed top speed but damage the airframe doing so.

In Canada we had the CF-104 with composite intakes. Arriving at top speed the intakes where deforming giving more air to the engine and making the jet accelerate more, if the pilot let it go and pass top speed the Canadian CF-104 would swallow the deforming composite intake and destroy the engine....

in the podcast yankee said the plane somehow leveled itself after been hit, and continued to fly to mach2.08 before its self-destruct mode was turned on.

Does anyone know the updated status on which unit/s still operate J-7 & J-8 variants in PLAAF service? Especially the J-7s, since they're simply not competitive in modern environment with BVR.

Only used in second line units now. J-7s I think are reportedly retiring this year or the next. Could be wrong but only J-8II reconnaissance variant is in operation.

I actually hope that J-8 remains in operation until J-36 enters service so we have four generations simultaneously operational.

AFAICT, there's only a single combat AB each of J-7s and J-8s:

The STC's 52nd AB uses the J-7G.

The ETC's 93rd AB uses the J-8F - although this one might be a recce unit (unsure - anyone knows?).

And that's it for combat units. Meanwhile, the PLANAF has already retired all its J-7s/J-8s.

On one hand, the J-8DF is capable of carrying PL-12 missiles, giving it limitedBVR combat capability. On the other hand, these aircraft boast short turnaround times, making them valuable for rapid response scenarios in hotspot areas during peacetime operations.
