I don't think this trip will help Ma get those F-16s, he brings up good points on maintaining peaceful cross-straits relations while still maintaing a capable military but notice how the article does not mention any Democratic party members being talked to specifically, and of course they control the White House AND the Senate

He won't get any F-16s this year, or the next. Everyone is preoccupied with North Korea and the Global Financial Crisis. Now is a good time to invest in Taiwan's own defence industry.

Taiwan doesnt have the money for that right now. its better to just maintain the status quo

Taiwan does have the money = ="

They've allocated the money for upgrades to the IDF and purchase of F-16 already in the defense budget. If the US does say that they aren't gonna sell for the time being, then I'm sure the government would invest in at least the drawing board part of the next defense fighter.

It's not gonna be status quo when we don't invest any money at all.

not really, Taiwan has been in a bad economic and financial shape since Chen was in power. using Li Ao's phrase Taiwan trying to keep up with the development of PLA is like trying to "keep up with a car on a tricycle". everytime they purchase something, its only gonna provoke the mainland to invest more into their already rapidly-growing R&D budget. in the end Mainland economy will benefit from the development of military industry (cuz the technology can be applied to other places, and vice versa) but Taiwan will hurt big time in terms of economy...
