Ya hey look, I don't want to be the party pooper here, nor do I mean to get off topic, but where are they going to get the funding for all this stuff, I mean I can imagine the PRC making this in their backyard, but for Taiwan, it's more like a wet dream. not to mention the external political arguments from previous ROCN ship designs, can we even expect these plans to be put into action?
Then again with that new Trump administration, we are starting to see a bit of a shift both political and economical.

Taiwan regime are corrupt with no end and no hope and no chance of it ever becoming it's own nation. Operation Retake the Motherland is getting more and more bleak by each generation.

Considering how ridiculously cheap the current budget is ($11.4 billion)*, and Tsai's delusional plans to build a 4++ fighter, SSKs, long range LACMs a LHD, and AAW DDGs on that sort of money.....

Those are very much long-term plans, and not all of them will have the same priority as others. The submarines will probably get more priority, but costs will still be spread out.

Some platforms like the destroyers may be a cheap-and-cheerful solution - much like how French plans to have lots of Horizon frigates were replaced by modified FREMMs.

The fact that they pitched the whole naval buildup at $15 billion (when $30 is a much more reasonable estimate considering the current envisioned capabilities) suggests that Tsai's MoD is either dishonest or incompetent when it comes to program management.

Though to be fair, apparently it was under Ma's watch that the Tuo River stealth corvette was overloaded with armaments.

Taiwan want to design and build 8 diesel electric subs

This is a going to be interesting, wonder how much they will screw it up. Only country that can help them is the US, and they don't design diesel sub's anymore.

No previous experience of any kind, wonder how bad they will be

Nothing new they have been looking to for a few years now. Rumor mills keep turning

Meet the Echo Voyager, made by Boeing Diesel / Electric powered Unmanned Submarine. yes no crew but capable of independent operations for months.

They have operated for decades, they know what they want and have a fairly good internal industrial base besides that as I indicated above they have a possible tech advisor especially if the PRC keeps pushing buttons of a key neighbor....

well if you check the bilateral trade that ''key neighbor'' does with China and compare it with Taiwan, then the chances of it being a tech advisor to Taiwan's on again off again sub program is pretty slim.

US have skilled tradespeople that Taiwan does not.

Operating something that is 60 years old and knowing what you want doesn't mean its possible to engineer it. Most of engineering ability comes from experience, just having go-bys is only going to take you 50% of the way. Especially sub design and construction, it is a totally different beast from normal shipping.

Obviously Taiwan needs submarines, but 3000 tons with a VLS is too big and expensive. I think Taiwan should go for something smaller first and build it in numbers, maybe a sub 1000 ton submarine, they don't need a large, ocean going submarine. Also, it would be nice if they could get their hands on used Japanese subs, but, that's probably not possible.
