This thread is now re-opened. A friendy reminder from your moderators. Any more PRC vs ROC discussion of a volitale nature will cause this thread to be closed:nono:. Read what Golly wrote when he first re-opened this thread.

Ok It's time to open a new thread for the subject as the previous one had to be closed as you guys couldn't play nice...

Altough our basic rules should prevent any of the past misconducts taking place, somehow even the members whom normally doesen't behaive nastly, are loosing their gribs over this matter. I know Taiwan is a controversial subject and raises strong feelings to direction or another but the forums policy doesen't give you guys room for those areas in which those strong emotions usually pops out.

So in order to get this thread moving smoothly, here are some more spesific rules and things to be remembered.

Thread etiquette
(Drafted by Fumanchu from our request)

Please note that this thread is reserved for discussion of Taiwanese military news, developments, etc. The following is a list of topics and comments that expressly forbidden:

- Discussion of the China-Taiwan relationship.
- Why does Taiwan need an army/Why does Taiwan need to buy weapons?
- Taiwan should unite with China/declare independence.
- China/Taiwan cannot win the war.

Do not try to dodge around this list - it is not exhaustive. Please remember to adhere to the general forum rules too.

It is best to avoid all diplomatic, economic and political discussion. Focus on news about the change in the Taiwanese armed forces.

These code of conducts are being executed even more vigilance manners than in other threads so be aware of breaking them. Any moderation will automaticly mean official warning to the one who forces us to intervene with his/her posts, regardless of the scale or the persons previous reputation.

So despite this harsh opening, I welcome you all to come here and discuss about the military issues of Taiwan

Thread re-opened..Enjoy!

Taipei - Taiwan has signed a deal to buy 12 P-3C anti- submarine aircraft from the United States and has asked the US to build a P-3C maintenance centre in Taiwan, the Central News Agency (CNA) said on Saturday. Wu Wei-jung, director of the Defence Ministry's Military Procurement Bureau, confirmed the P-3C deal during a background briefing to the press Saturday, according to CNA.

Wu said that Taiwan's Industrial Development Bureau signed the deal to buy the aircraft from Lockheed Martin in December 2007, after Lockheed Martin had agreed to include technology transfer, or industrial cooperation, in the deal.

Under the agreement, Wu said, Taiwan has requested that eight of the 12 P-3Cs be manufactured in Taiwan as well as a flight simulator.

Lockheed Martin has submitted its industrial cooperation plan for Taiwan to the US Navy, CNA quoted Wu as saying.

The P-3C can perform in various roles including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, maritime surveillance, naval fleet support, and search and rescue.

Taiwan, separated from China by the 200-kilometre Taiwan Strait, wants to introduce the all-weather aircraft to boost its defences against China, which views the island as part of its territory.

Taiwan is also seeking to buy 60 F-16C/D warplanes, eight diesel submarines and six batteries of the PAC-III anti-missile system from the US, Taiwan's main arms supplier.

I think there's a mis-translation there. The Orions will be refurbished (from excess USN stock), not manufactured. But it would be good for Taiwan if it can carry out this work and/or have a maintenance centre opened up.

Now I suppose we just need some information on a firm timetable.

Taiwan Military

Does anyone think thats its possible after the Taiwanese elections that Taiwan will be able to procure the 66 F-16 C/Ds which are on hold at the moment?

All members feel free to answer this question. However leave the ROC politics out of your answer.

I think the answer is that Taiwan will be able to. Every indication is that the hold-up has been over short-term political issues, which of course we cannot discuss here and now. The other supposed problem, lack of action over the 2001 arms sales, has now gone with the 2007 and 2008 Taiwanese defence budgets.

Of course Taiwan may decide not to purchase the F-16s if the reports on Franco-Taiwanese discussions over the Rafale lead to a deal - there's not enough money for both.

Yea, but i heard that the defence ministry declined to purchase the Rafale because it was too expensive. F-16s are alot cheaper, and its highly unlikely that the French would still sell Taiwan arms due to its ever growing close relationship with China.

It's all in Chinese, and I can't remember which Taiwanese newspapers they were from. I had a chat with someone I know in Taiwan about it recently. Maybe someone else came across them recently? I remember there was also discussion of minesweepers and upgrades to the Kang Ding (Lafayette) AAW system from France.

kliu, discussions reportedly are still on-going. France has no export sales so far (and no large prospective ones) for the Rafale, so it can't demand more than Taiwan can afford if it wants to see an order made - the F-16 deal is leverage in that respect. But we won't hear anything until a deal is actually announced (if it is finalised), so there isn't much more to say in this respect.

Lol, um if you still have the article can u send it to me or post it here? i wanna have a read of it. I know they were gonna upgrade the ships and possibly the Mirage 2000 fighters and the minesweepers. But still i reckon its unlikely due to the fact that the Rafale is a 4.5 generation fighter aircraft.
