Well, I believe the primary purpose (against whomever) is the protection of the main Island.

However, they also have enough endurance to be used in the SCS island disputes if necessary...but, depending on who they were confronting, they would need other escorts providing AAW support in going that far.

If they upgraded facilities at Taiping such as larger radar and some AAW, they could base one of these FACs out there which would bolster their current deployment out there tremendously.

Outstanding.

Four more Perrys. They are still good vessels, particularly for ASW work.

Too bad the ROCN could not get four of the Ingalls Patrol Frigate designs.

Hehe I don't imagine the ROCN would have the funds to independently fund the development of a new and relatively "unproven" ship without another major buyer, even if we do consider that the proposed frigate design is derived from the legend class (it's like a distant cousin)

The US is going to sell 8 Perry class FFG's in total to Taiwan. Then they can replace all of their old Chi Yang (Knox) class FFG's with Perry's. The Taiwanese have a licence to build Perry's themselves and in the 1990's they did build them and they are called Cheng Kung class. But each boat ended up costing more then 500 million dollars (nearly twice the cost of a Type 054A) so they decided to buy second hand this time.

Those Perry's aren't going to provide any sort of credible deterrence at all. ROCN needs new AIP subs.

Those Perry's are good enough vis-a-vis the Philippines. The time for war against China has passed and won't come back. So in any other conflict, I can't think of one for the moment, Taiwan might be backed by PLAN.
