Smart way to draw enemy fire and attention to it's location without risking lives, therefore counter strike the enemy from another location. Another use could be as sniping enemy units. The problem is that you got one loaded magazine, so use it wisely.

Last year Syrian rebels claimed to have captured a weapons cache containing 5,000 Sturmgewehr 44 rifles.

5000?!?! wow! do you know how much those go for here in the states?

This thing is extremely unlikely to have the fine motor controls or reaction time needed for sniping work.

These guys really have the wrong sort of weapon rigged up to that contraption.

Walt had it right when he rigged up a LMG. What you want is volume of fire to make up for the lack of accuracy and also to keep the enemy's heads down so they don't realise what is shooting at them, and you also want sustained firepower to keep the enemy pinned down long enough for your guys to flank them or pull out since this is clearly a static defensive weapon and not really suited for offensive missions.

That would likely mean either a RPD or RPK problem is this rig though sophisticated for its manufacture is not exactly built for recoil. Not sure this rig could take a full auto drum mag in terms of weight or recoil and if you go with a RPK with a box mag your not really getting anything not found in the STG44 rig.

Given the SAA's wide use of armour I thought IEDs would be more useful, not sure why it is not as widely used in this conflict as surely the FSA would have captured quite a bit of shells and explosives.

Probably because the Syrian army activities and patrols did NOT allowed the Syrian rebel an opportune time to set it up at their desire location. Plus with the constant fighting and bombardment in the general area would make sending personnel to set up IEDs too risky with little or no effect.

It could also have to do with where the SSA operates, IED's are fixed weapons that are best used in the opening of a Ambush, that means you need a funnel, A place where in your target has to enter a concentrated kill zone. IED's in Iraq and Vietnam used Road sides. Most of the Videos we have seen of Armor in Syria show open terrain.

It'd be a good source of funds sure, but to fence even a tenth of that in the open market will attract too much attention.

It would be pointless anyway. Importation would be bared by the ATF on multiple counts. They are true selective fire weapons, non sport style with Nazi proof marks, large capacity magazines and the dreaded bayonet lug... I can see it now President Obama would meet the freighter at the dock with a giant metal shredder and a grin from ear to ear.
