It'll happen as China inch closer to their manned Moon mission.

I still remember long time ago that any Chinese Science Fiction would look weird; and their stars were not fitted for such the role. They looked good in their traditional costumes in Kungfu Genre, or Hongkong Mafia stories. But today, they fit to the role even without any effort.

"Wandering Earth" is one of the best sci-fi movies I've ever seen, and it felt Chinese every single second. Wu Jing and Wu Mengda gave amazing performances.

First the Chinese try to force their culture on the NBA and now this? How evil the Chinese are trying to make the Jedi in their image when the Jedi were based on... nevermind.

LOL, commercialization at its finest: throw enough money at it, and something will happen. Interestingly enough, the original Transformers cartoons were hugely popular in China, and it didn't need any "Chinese characteristics". The original Star Wars movies were shown in China in the late 1980's, but obviously they didn't make much of an impact.

Rather than Star Wars, Chinese should write their own cultured based Space Opera. Like Three Kingdom on Space, or something else.

You know how most Space Opera have this "United Earth" as its basis? Well, what if humanity started colonizing space without a unified Earth? What if China, US, and Russia each had their own colonies that grew into major powers, much like how the colonization of the Americas proceeded. Over time, we end up with 3 rival factions, bound by culture and language. The American colonies form a decentralized federation, the Chinese colonies are united under a republican dominion, and the Russian colonies are part of a theocratic empire.

Its not written by Chinese though, and this feels to me like Western POV Orientalism, just like the West view Kung Fu, Ninja and Samurai movies.

As for doing science fiction in cinema, I felt that the Wandering Earth is good, although I feel that at some points, its trying to copy some of the bad points of Hollywood summer movies badly.

Shanghai Fortress is horrible but has great SFX. This movie is trying too hard to sell to young Chinese millennials and needs to bring in young no talent actors just because they look good and aspire to do millennial things that is supposed to bring sympathy and audience identification to the characters. This one is currently shown in Netflix. This movie was so bad that the director of the film publicly apologized for it after it crashed at the Chinese box office. Chinese film producers need to stop insulting the intelligence of Chinese movie audiences who can smell imitation of Hollywood devices a mile away.

Wingrove's Chung Kuo series is typical yellow peril trash. It's basically about a dystopic future ruled by Fu Manchu-esque Chinese.

There will always be trashy movies in every genre. To anyone who doubts the ability of the Chinese to make good scifi movies, I always point them toward Wandering Earth.

From Japan there is 銀河英雄伝説(Legend of the Galactic Heroes)
A series of science fiction novels written by Yoshiki Tanaka. In humanity's distant future, two interstellar states – the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance respectively.

Some may know it since it has been made into a successful anime series.

This one is very good. There is a modernized version of the anime that is being simulcasted in Crunchyroll. The scale of the battles are incredible, as they encompass thousands, if not tens of thousands of ships in one time.
