that her character would be named Captain Han Bo. A press release announcing the news was sent out at 10:31 PST this morning (I see what you did there, CBS!).

Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) will play Lt. Saru, a Starfleet science officer and a member of an alien species unseen before in the Star Trek universe.

Doug Jones cast as Lt. Saru

Rapp (A Beautiful Mind) will portray the role of Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist (fungus expert) and science officer. Lt. Stamets is confirmed to be the first ever openly gay character in the history of Star Trek on television (he’s second if you count Sulu in Star Trek Beyond).

Those wondering Georgiou I believe is a Greek surname

They're already getting stuff wrong like Michelle Yeoh character's name. Looks like they're going to be using multiple different starships and crews. Maybe they're going to have an epic storyline and not just episodic.

From early leaks indications were that CBS was looking to a Serialized Format closer to the over arching story line of Ds9 that ran from beginning to end the Start to end of the Dominion war. vs the Traditional Episodic format. This means a large event like the 3 year war between the Federation and Klingon Empire. This would likely piss off a ton of fans as the Axanar fan film was looking to do a battle from that conflict.

Yes apparently Hollywood likes following success stories and the flavor of the month is the Game of Thrones format. Big story following multiple characters following their own narrative that don't interact directly. Also expect characters to die and not just wearing red shirts. I'm watching Van Helsing on Syfy and they pretty much killed off most of the characters that came across as the main cast from the beginning. The show is most likely following the Game of Thrones no one is safe unpredictability path.

A bit off topic, but I've always felt that all this politicking and warfare in Star Trek is a departure from the "spirit" of the original series, which was exploration.

If you think about it, it doesn't make much sense either. The Federation is supposed to be this alliance of enlightened societies that have conquered greed and poverty. People join the Starfleet not because they get paid better or have better benefits, but because they get to see the galaxy. Technologies like replicators, holograms, and teleportation means nobody should ever need to work for a living.

So why is the Federation engaged in warfare with Klingons and Romulans? What do these factions gain by fighting each other?

The Federation is a Utopia not necessarily the Klingons and Romulans additionally this would be taking place in the 23rd century before Replicators and Holodecks. Finally there are still resources that are not replicable like Class M worlds to populate.
And Finally I don't think even Gene was convinced that War was no longer a reality of life. Remember the TOS introduced both the Klingons and Romulans.

The Federation is a Utopia because of technologies like replicators, which other factions can acquire or already possess. They could easily have infinite resources if they want to, so why do they fight each other?

The Ferengi are supposed to be ultra-capitalistic, but IIRC they also have replicators? How does capitalism work in a world of free commodities?

Because power and it's acquisition is still there.
Because old grudges still burn.
Because Paranoia still exists.
Because

Because sometimes you just don't like the look of there deflector dish.
